Minor League Notebook: July 28th

Some extra inning madness today in the Giants minor league system. 12 runs were scored in the 10th innings combined in today's games! Who won? Who lost? Just another day in the Minors.

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Fresno 6, Nashville 5 (7 Innings)
WP: M. Cain
LP: J. Housman (4-9, 5.71)
SV: J. Taschner (6)
Matt Cain had one of those mixed sorts of days for Fresno. On one hand, he struck out a masterful 11 in just 5 innings. On the other hand, he gave up 5 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks, allowing 2 home runs. Jeremy Accardo and Jack Taschner each threw scoreless innings to hold onto the lead and get Cain the win, though. Mike Cervenak provided quite a bit of offense, going 4 for 4 with a double. Yamid Haad had a 3 run homer for the Grizzlies.

Notable Performances:

Norwich Navigators (AA): Norwich 5, New Hampshire 4 (10 Innings)
WP: W. Sadler (4-4, 4.09)
LP: J. De Jong (1-4, 7.87)
Norwich saw some extra inning fireworks, but didn’t get burned on Thursday. Tied at 2 going into the 10th, William Sadler gave up 2 runs in the top half of the inning off of 2 walks and 2 singles. But in the bottom half, Carlos Valderrama, Justin Knoedler and Anthony Labarbera all had back to back to back singles to get back one run and left 2 runners on for Randy Walter, who hit a walk-off triple to win the game. San Jose Giants (High-A): Stockton 6, San Jose 0
WP: B. Ziegler (8-7, 5.06)

San Jose’s offense was locked out of the scorebook, despite gathering 8 hits on the day. Osiris Matos took a rough day, giving up 7 runs on 9 hits (3 of them home runs) through 6 innings. Meanwhile, Augusta picked up 9 hits, but only 2 for extra bases (doubles by Brian Horwitz and Nick Conte), and weren’t able to keep up on the day. LP: B. Anderson (2-1, 3.21)
Wild game for the Volcanoes, which went into the 10th inning tied at 4, and nearly matched all the runs scored in regulation just in the 10th. In the top of the 10th, Jose Yens had a 2 runs homer and Mark Minicozzi had a solo shot to take a 3 run lead. But Brian Anderson couldn’t hold it, loading the bases on 2 hits and hitting a batter with a pitch, then giving up a bases clearing triple, followed by a sacrifice fly to take the loss.
