Minor League Notebook: July 30th-31st

Big time performances all over the minors this weekend, but none so big as a soon-to-be hot prospect making his debut at a new level, and giving up only 1 hit and 1 walk through 6 innings, and striking out 11! Yea, for Daniel Griffin, it was just another weekend in the minors!

July 30th
Fresno Grizzzlies (AAA): Memphis 4, Fresno 2
WP: T. Johnson (2-1, 5.00)
LP: B. Puffer (5-3, 3.90)

Fresno started out hot, getting 3 runs in the first, but couldn’t hold on for the win. The first three batters, Doug Clark, Brian Dallimore and Todd Linden, got on courtesy of two singles and a walk, and Torcato singled home Clark. Angel Chavez would then single in Dallimore and Linden. Seung Song fared better in his 3 start in AAA than he had before, giving up 3 runs through 7 innings on 5 hits and 3 walks, allowing Memphis to tie the game. Brandon Puffer pitched the 8th and gave up the winning (unearned) run.

Carlos Valderrama hit a 2nd inning grand slam to put Norwich up early and for the game. Valderrama was 2 for 3 on the day with 2 runs scored, and also drew 2 walks and stole a base. Brian Mazone pitch 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and no walks for the win, and Chris Begg had a scoreless inning in relief.

Jesus Reina gave up 4 runs in 4 innings, on 4 hits and 4 walks, leading to Saturday’s loss. San Jose was only 1 run back going into the 9th, but Mitch Walk gave up 3 runs, 1 earned, in the 9th to put the game out of reach.

Caleb Salankey picked up his 9th win of the season, holding Charleston to 3 runs through 5.2 innings, and letting the offense do the rest. Jon Armitage went 2 for 3, and Simon Klink went 2 for 5 with an RBI.

Daniel Griffin made his Salem-Kezier debut in spectacular fashion, going 6 innings, giving up just 1 hit and 1 walk and striking out an amazing 11. Charlie Babineaux made sure that stood up before the bullpen gave up 2 runs, with a 2 RBI single in the 4th. Jose Yens had an 8th inning RBI to keep S-K on top.

A 3 run fourth inning, powered by Julio Ramirez’s 2 run single, put Fresno up for good in Sunday’s win. Doug Devore went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI in the victory. Mitch Wylie pitched 5 scoreless innings for the win.

Fred Lewis hit an RBI double in the 9th to tie the game late, but Matt Palmer gave up the winning run to the Rock Cats on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning. Lewis was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles on the day. Patrick Misch had another solid start since his demotion to Norwich, giving up 3 runs in 8 innings on 8 hits and 1 walk.

Jesse Floyd pitched 7 shutout innings, giving up 5 hits and 4 walks, to lead San Jose to a convincing win on Sunday. Eddy Martinez-Esteve went 2 for 3 and hit his 13th home run of the season in the 8th, a solo shot. He collected 3 RBI, while John Bowker got the other 2.

Augusta gave up 2 runs in the 8th inning to blow the lead, then lost the game in extras. In the 8th, Arnoldo Mercado walked 2 batters with 1 out, and was replaced by Brian Stirm. Stirm allowed the runners to advance on a wild pitch, and a groundout and a double led to both runs scoring. In the 10th, Adam Gardner allowed a leadoff single. The runner stole 2nd and got to third on an error, before being scored by another single.

The Volcanoes collected 15 hits in Sunday’s win. William Thompson went 4 for 5 with a homer and 2 RBI, while Pablo Sandoval went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 more RBI to lead Salem Keizer to the win. Sergio Romo went 5 innings in the start, allowing 2 runs over 5 innings, and striking out 7.
