Minor League Notebook: August 6th-7th

The weekend was highlighted by one player getting 3 home runs in one game in a losing effort, but there's plenty to see. A big 6 game series between the top two teams in one league begins. The chase for a club HR record and the league's MVP award is underway in Fresno. Just another weekend in the minors!

August 6th:
Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Round Rock 4, Fresno 0
WP: F. Nieve (3-4, 4.81)
LP: M. Wylie (1-3, 4.31)
Round Rock pitcher Fernando Nieve allowed only 5 hits in a complete game shutout over the Grizzlies. Grizzly starter Mitch Wylie went 8 innings giving up 2 runs on 5 hits. Fresno got no extra base hits, and only Tony Torcato collected more than one knock.

Anthony Moreno gave up 3 runs in 3+ innings of work, giving up 3 runs in the 4th before being relieved by Alfredo Simon. Simon stranded the 2 runners left by Moreno, and pitched 3 scoreless innings. But it wasn’t enough as reliever Scott Chiasson gave up a walk, a 2 runs homer and a triple, and then William Sadler gave up the runner left on and 2 more to lose the game.

Juan Serrato gave up 4 runs on 5 innings for the loss on Saturday. Eddy Martinez-Esteve went 1 for 4 with a double, and Todd Jennings, back at 2nd base, had an RBI double of his own.

Augusta took advantage of a 5 run 3rd inning, powered by a 3 run homer by Jonathan Armitage, to win Saturday’s game. Kyle Haines added an RBI double, and Carlos Sosa hit into an RBI groundout as part of the big inning. Starter Darren Sack went 5.2 innings, giving up 2 runs.

Michael Mooney had his 5th home run of the short season, and Benjamin Copeland had his first in S-K as the Volcanoes won 6 to 5. Mooney and Copeland each went 3 for 4 on the day. Starter Taylor Wilding gave up 4 runs in 3 innings, but Matt Raguse went 4 scoreless innings in relief to get the win.

2 late inning rallies led to the Rookies win on Saturday. In the 7th, a 4 run rally was powered by Henry Gutierrez’s bases loaded single that scored 2 runs. In the 9th, 2 of the 3 runs came when Rangers pitcher Jose Jaimes hit both Christopher Stanton and Michael Santoro with the bases loaded.

Doug DeVore collected 3 home runs and 5 RBI, but it wasn’t enough for the Grizzlies to get a win. Stephen Randolph gave up 5 runs, only 2 earned, through 4 innings in his return to the Grizzlies after an unsuccessful stint with the New Orleans Zephyrs. Brandon Puffer gave up 3 runs in just over an inning of work to lose the lead for Fresno. Brandon Villafuerte gave up the final run.

The Giants won on the back of 3 home runs to a powering win over the Modesto Nuts. Jon Bowker had a solo home run in the first to give the Giants a lead early. Eddy Martinez-Esteve added a solo shot in the 6th, while Nate Schierholtz powered a big 8th inning rally with a 3 run shot. Garrett Broshuis went 7 innings for the win, giving up 1 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks.

Nick Pereira had a tough day in the first of 6 straight games between the two top teams in the Northwest League. Pereira gave up 7 runs, 6 earned, in 2.1 innings to take the loss. Pablo Sandoval went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI for the Volcanoes.

The Athletics beat the Giants rookies to end a 6 game winning streak and hand the Giants only their 2nd loss in 14 games. The Giants were held to only 4 hits by the Athletics pitching. Ryan Shaver gave up 1 run on 3 hits and a walk in 2 innings to take the loss, and an unearned run allowed by Robert Grace late sealed the game for the A’s.
