Minor League Notebook: August 10th

Not the greatest day ever in the minors. Some pitching prospects got knocked around. Only 1 win in the system, and that was in a rain shortened game. And the Volcanoes lost the 3rd of 4 in a big series between the top two teams in the NWL. Just another day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Albuquerque 6, Fresno 4
WP: F. Castillo (9-8, 5.25)
LP: S. Son (0-1, 4.18)
SV: F. Gracesqui (1)
At least it seems Seung Song has found his control. Unfortunately, it hasn’t stopped the runs. Song gave up 5 runs, 4 earned, in 6 innings despite having no walks. Fresno did not get on the board until scoring 2 runs in the 8th and 9th each, but it was not enough to come back.

Notable Performances:
Justin Knoedler: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, .276
Todd Linden: 1-4, 1 2B, .321
Seung Song: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR, 4.18 ERA

Norwich Navigators (AA): Binghamton 9, Norwich 6
WP: J. Rodriguez (2-5, 4.93)
LP: O. Montero (4-4, 4.61)
SV: J. Hill (4)
Patrick Misch gave up 5 runs in 5 innings on Wednesday, but it was just enough to keep Norwich tied. A 3 run fifth, started by Misch’s double, gave Norwich 5 runs. But Oscar Montero gave up 3 runs in the 6th, leading to Norwich’s loss. Merkin Valdez once again pitched in relief, giving up a solo home run in 1 inning of work.

Notable Performances:
Fred Lewis: 3-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 CS, .277
Carlos Valderrama: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB, .303
Patrick Misch: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO, 2 HR, 2.97 ERA
Merkin Valdez: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 3.62 ERA

San Jose Giants (High-A): Bakersfield 9, San Jose 4
WP: W. Lebron (3-4, 5.40)
LP: J. Floyd (10-5, 4.56)
SV: M. Padgett (5)
Jesse Floyd got knocked around early, giving up 8 runs, 6 earned, in just 3.2 inning to take a hard loss. Travis Ishikawa went 2 for 3, but also had 2 errors, leading to the unearned runs. Jake Wald hit a grand slam in the 4th inning, his 14th home run of the season, for all of San Jose’s runs.

Notable Performances:
Travis Ishikawa: 2-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 2 E, .281
Jake Wald: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 SO, .295
Jesse Floyd: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO, 4.56 ERA

Augusta GreenJackets: Augusta 5, Columbus 3 (6 innings; Rain)
WP: A. Gardner (3-1, 3.63)
LP: D. Reina (0-3, 5.40)
Augusta took advantage of some early wildness to score early and lead to a win. Columbus starter Dimas Reina struck out leadoff batter Kyle Haines in the first, but then walked 4 straight to walk in a run, then walked a fifth after a pop out to score the 2nd run. In the 5th, it was more of the same, as he walked two after a leadoff single to load the bases. Although he was replaced after that, two singles scored all 3 of those runners.

Notable Performances:
Brian Horwitz: 2-2, 2 R, 1 BB, .339
Marcus Sanders: 0-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 SB, .294
Caleb Salankey: 3.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 BB, 6 SO, 3.77 ERA

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A): Vancouver 5, Salem-Keizer 3
WP: J. Corchado (3-1, 5.02)
LP: M. Raguse (4-3, 4.91)
SV: B. Kilby (10)
Vancouver took the third out of 4 games so far played between them and Salem-Kezier out of 6 straight. S-K starter Sergio Romo gave up 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 8, but reliever Matt Raguse gave up 2 more to take the loss. Pablo Sandoval went 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Notable Performances:
Mark Minicozzi: 3-4, 1 R, .306
Pablo Sandoval: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, .347
Barry Gunther: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .371
Sergio Romo: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO, 1 HR, 1.58 ERA
