Minor League Notebook: August 13th-14th

A wild weekend of minor league baseball. Fresno faces off with rival Sacramento, and extra frames are needed. The San Jose Giants gear up for the final stretch going into the California League Playoffs. And the Volcanoes, stinging from losing 5 of 6 to the First Place Vancouver Canadiens, rebound. Just another couple of days in the Minors!

August 13th:
Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Sacramento 7, Fresno 5 (13 Innings)
WP: R. Flores (4-3, 2.19)
LP: J. Fikac (4-9, 5.19)
An extra innings affair topped by a Sacramento walkoff homer overshadowed another good start by Matt Cain. Cain went 6 innings, giving up 2 runs, 1 earned,, on 4 hits, 2 walks and 8 K’s. Jeremy Fikac went 3.1 innings in relief, almost all of the extra frames, before giving up the big hit in the 13th. The first Rivercats run came in on a play eerily similar to the one in Oakland the previous week, when Matt Cain dropped a throw from the catcher and allowed an alert runner from third to score.

Chris Begg had a strong 7 inning outing to hold Portland at bay. Meanwhile, the offense hit 3 home runs, one each by Fred Lewis, Eliexer Alfonzo and Tim Hutting to power a blowout victory. Lewis went 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.

San Jose pounded Bakersfield, with Brian Buscher going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI leading the way. Ryan Sadoski did all he needed as the starter, holding Bakersfield to 4 runs, 3 earned, over 6 innings. Todd Jennings went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 runs scored, and Nate Schierholtz went 3 for 6 with a double and 2 runs scored as well.

Michael Wagner went 2 for 4 with a double and a home run, collecting 3 RBI in Augusta’s 6-3 win on Saturday. Wagner’s home run, in the 3rd, was a solo shot. Anthony Pannone went 7 shutout innings, giving up just 2 hits and 3 walks.

Reeling from a rough series losing 5 of 6 to Vancouver, the Volcanoes rebounded against Boise. Joseph Martinez threw 7 shutout innings, giving up just 2 hits and no walks. Meanwhile, Michael Mooney went 2 for 4 and Pablos Sandoval went 3 for 4 in a return to form, and both Mark Minicozzi and Benjamin Copeland added triples to the effort.

The Brewers scored 6 runs in the final two innings to overcome a 4-3 deficit and win Saturday. Ryan Shaver was credited with the loss, loading the bases with one out before being replaced by Juan Farrach. Farrach gave up a double to the only hitter he faced to let those runs score. Paul Lussier came in to get the Giants out of the 8th, but gave up 3 more in the 9th, which made a 3 run comeback attempt in the 9th futile.

A second straight day of extra inning baseball came to an end in favor of the Grizzlies, with Doug Clark singling Julio Ramirez in from 3rd. Matt Kinney went 7 innings, giving up 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks while netting 11 strikeouts.

It was 8 innings of shutout ball in Sunday’s game, but lucky for Norwich, they slipped 2 runs in under the door in the first to get the win. Valderrama singled and Frandsen got on base by way of error to lead off the game, and a Dan Ortmeier walk loaded the bases. Randy Walter got a sac fly, and Eliezer Alfonzo followed with an RBI groundout. It was Brian Mazone the rest of the way, giving up only 3 hits and a walk through 8.

Mitch Walk made his first start of the year and got hit hard. He gave up 5 runs, only 1 of which was earned, in 3.2 innings. Jeff Petersen then gave up 4 more, all unearned. Todd Jennings, who had one of the two costly errors, got 2 RBI without benefit of a hit, with a sacrifice fly and a ground out.

Brian Horwitz went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, picking up 2 RBI, in Augusta’s win. Ben Thurmond made a start, giving up 1 run in 4 innings, but Osiris Matos got the win after allowing 2 runs in 2 innings in relief. Marcus Sanders was replaced in the 3rd inning by Johany Abreu, with no reason yet given for his removal.

Daniel Griffin had a big day for S-K, gathering 8 strikeouts over 5 shutout innings. Benjamin Copeland and Mark Minicozzi each went 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI to help push S-K to another needed win. Joey Dyche hit a leadoff home run for the first of his pro career.
