Minor League Notebook: August 23rd

Matt Cain goes for Fresno, but he's not the story of the game. San Jose pursues the 2nd half leading Stockton Ports, and S-K gets another great starting performance. Just another day in the minors!

Matt Cain’s most recent great start was put on the back burner by a marathon game. Cain went 6 shutout innings, giving up 4 hits, 1 walk and striking out 7. But after the bullpen gave up the lead, it wasn’t until Julio Ramirez’s bases loaded double and Angel Chavez’s 2 RBI single that Fresno had the win. Former Giant prospect Jesse Foppert started the game for Tacoma, and went 3 no-hit innings in injury rehab.

Brian Burres suffered through a tough start, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits and 5 walks in just 3.2 innings while taking the loss. Carlos Valderrama was the only Navigator starter with more than 1 hit, going 2 for 4 with an RBI, walk and strikeout.

San Jose scored 5 runs in the final 2 innings to take Tuesday’s win. In the 7th, Clay Timpner singled home Jake Wald and Guillermo Rodriguez. He also picked up an RBI in the 8th with a single. Pat Dobson had a 2 RBI triple in the 8th as well to pick up the scoring. Garrett Broshuis went 6.2 IP, giving up only 3 runs, but didn’t get the win.

Only Carlos Sosa’s 2 run homer was evidence of Augusta’s offense on Tuesday. Sosa was the only GreenJacket with multiple hits, going 2 for 4. Darren Sack went 3.1 innings, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks.

Christopher Nieto gave up 1 unearned run in 5 innings in the start, but S-K’s offense was handcuffed by Spokane in Tuesday’s loss. The Volcanoes collected only 4 hits, and committed 3 errors in the loss.

This game was a 1-1 tie after the 2nd inning all the way until the 9th, when the Giants got 3 runs to break the game wide open. Emmanuel Cividanes doubled with 2 out and the bases loaded for the game winning runs. Gregorio Martinez started the game, giving up 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 8 in 6 innings.
