Minor League Notebook: August 25th

The 2005 College World Series MOP (Most Outstanding Player) hits his 2nd home run in 2 days for the Volcanoes. Meanwhile, the SJ Giants outslug the Nuts, and Seung Song goes up against Sacramento. Just another day in the minors!

Seung Song pitched a solid game, but Fresno’s offense was unable to score more than one run with 9 hits. Doug DeVore was responsible for the only run with a solo home run in the 5th inning. Song gave up 2 runs, both earned, over 7 innings on 5 hits and 4 walks. Brian Wilson allowed 2 unearned runs in the 8th, thanks to errors by Mike Cervenak and Kevin Frandsen.

Eliezer Alfonzo had an 8th inning grand slam to put the Navigators in the win column, edging New Hampshire 7-4 late. Randy Walter added 2 RBI with 2 doubles. Starter Brian Mazone gave up 3 runs in 5 innings, while Alfredo Simon went 2 innings for the save.

A 5 run third inning was the key to San Jose’s victory Thursday. Nate Schierholtz hit a bases loaded ground rule double to score 2 runs, and then Travis Ishikawa hit a 3 run homer to power the inning. Starter Jason Waddell went 4.1 innings, giving up 2 runson 3 hits and 3 walks.

A 3 run 6th inning was key to the GreenJackets victory. With Marcus Sanders on 3rd and Carlos Sosa on first after a walk, Simon Klink, Jonathan Armitage and Danny Trumble each had RBI singles to lead Augusta to a 4-3 victory. Anthony Pannone got a no decision, going 4.2 inning, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks.

A 5 run 8th inning was the key for Everett’s win over the Volcanoes. Wayne Foltin came in and gave up all 5 runs on 3 hits (1 was a home run) and 3 walks (1 intentional). David Maroul went 2 for 4 with a 2 run homer in the 3rd inning. Dan Griffin started the game, and went 4.0 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 6.
