Minor League Notebook: August 27th-28th

A big weekend in the minors as the seasons start to wind down. The Rookies in Arizona sweep a double header. Fresno has another weekend against the rival River Cats. And San Jose has a pair of extra inning games. Just another weekend in the minors!

8/27:
Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Sacramento 3, Fresno 2
WP: V. Moreno (4-2, 3.73)
LP: B. Wilson (0-1, 4.26)

Brian Cooper gave up 2 runs in 6 innings in his first start since returning to Fresno, but it wasn’t good enough for a win as Fresno was held to just two runs. Mike Cervenak singled in both runs in the 3rd, but that would be it. Brian Wilson took the loss, giving up a run on one hit and 2 walks in the 9th.

Anthony Moreno mad the start for the Navigators, and was knocked around by New Britain, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks, in 3.1 innings. Erick Threets got in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief in the loss. Tyler Von Schell hit a grand slam for most of Norwich’s offense.

Brian Buscher had a double and a home run, but San Jose couldn’t take down the Nuts in extra innings. John Bowker added a solo home run of his own. Brooks McNiven gave up 3 runs in 6.1 innings, only 1 earned, but Justin Hedrick gave up a run in the 9th to let Modesto tie the game, and then gave up a home run to the first batter in the 10th to lose the game.

Caleb Salankey gave up 5 runs in 4 innings in the start, and the GreenJackets were only able to manage 1 run on 4 hits in the game. Kyle Haines picked up half of them, going 2 for 3.

2 9th inning runs resulted in an exciting comeback win. D.J. Dixon had a pinch hit single with one out, and was replaced by pinch runner Adalberto Paulino. Mark Minicozzi then doubled him over to third. Pablo Sandoval follwed with an RBI single to tie the game, and Joey Dyche singled home Minicozzi for the win.

The Rookies made a big splash agains the Brewers, hitting 3 home runs in a blowout. Lisandro Disla, Dayton Buller and Michael Santoro all hit their first home runs of the first season to power the victory. Robert Grace went 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks, while Carlos De La Rosa went 3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Grizzlies were handcuffed by Sacramento prospect Juan Cruz, only managing 4 hits against him. Meanwhile, Garrett Broshuis made his first start at AAA from a callup from San Jose, and was hit hard by the PCL leaders. Broshuis gave up 5 runs in 6 innings on 9 hits and 2 walks.

Another great start by Chris Begg, and the Navigators got a rare win over the Rock Cats. Begg went 8.1 innings, giving up 2 runs, 1 earned, on 5 hits and a walk. Alfredo Simon got the save, his 17th of the year. Fred Lewis helped lead the way offensively, going 3 for 5 with a double.

A pitcher’s duel? San Jose was in one again, their 2nd straight extra innings game. Jeff Petersen went 5 shutout innings in the start, but Jason Waddell gave up a run in the 8th to tie the game at 1. But after Travis Ishikawa got on base after he struck out on a wild pitch, Anthony Contreras doubled him home in the 11th for the win. Joe Bateman took the win with 3 innings of relief work.

The GreenJackets scored 3 runs in the last two innings to break a 1-1 tie and take a win against the Braves. The 8th was kicked off by a Brian Horwitz double, followed bby a Carlos Sosa single. Simon Klink scored Horwitz on a fielder’s choice. Nick Conte added an RBI single later in the inning. In the 9th, Marcus Sanders got to 2nd on an error, then got to third on an error on the pickoff, and Horwitz doubled him home. Jonathan Sanchez made the start, going 5.1 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits and a walk.

Oh, who doesn’t love a blowout? Except the losers, I mean. Christopher Nieto, who now appears to be going by Ben, went 5 shutout innings to start the game, giving up 3 hits and a walk while striking out 4 to lower his ERA to 0.60. Jose Yens hit a 3 run homer in the 6th, but it wasn’t all of the offense. David Maroul went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, and Barry Gunther went 2 for 5 with 3 RBI as well.

Starter Tom Gornati went 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits, while striking out 7. In Game 2, Lisandro Disla went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI to pace the offense. Gregorio Martinez got the win with 3 scoreless innings of relief.
