Minor League Notebook: August 30th

One Giant minor league team wins it's league! Who is it? One hint: It's the 2nd year in a row they've won it! In other action, two pitchers looking for September callups make their cases, and Salem-Keizer explodes for a few runs in their playoff push. Just another Championship Day in the Minors!

Seung Song made his case for a September callup with a spectacular start on Tuesday. Song limited the division champion Rivercats to 3 hits and 2 walks over 7 innings, striking out 7. Brian Wilson allowed Sacramento’s only run in 2 innings of work. Kevin Frandsen led the offense, going 4 for 5 with 2 doubles. Tony Torcato and Julio Ramirez added home runs in the cause.

The Navigators blew a 1 run lead in the 8th inning, but got it back in the bottom half of the 8th to pick up a win as their season winds down. Brian Burres, heavily rumored to be headed to San Francisco’s rotation in September, went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and striking out 6. WP: C. Whiatker (2-4, 4.82)
LP: C. Malone (9-6, 3.82)
The GreenJackets scored 7 in the 3rd inning to power themselves just enough beyond the Catfish. AZL Giants (Rookie): No Game Scheduled

The Arizona Giants clinched the 2nd half title though they didn’t play the final day of the season, finishing a game ahead of the A’s and Mariners. Normally, the 2nd half winner would play the 1st half winner to determine the league champion, but since the Giants also won the 1st half, the league named the Giants champs and decided to forego a split squad game. This is the 2nd straight championship for the Giants in the rooke league. Congratulations, Meat!
