Minor League Notebook: September 1st

Wow, Norwich doesn't want to let their season go. Norwich wins big over the Trenton Thunder. Salem-Keizer has a chance to move into first in the NWL West division, and Augusta has to win to stay alive in the playoffs. Do they? Just another day in the minors!

The Grizzlies banged out 15 hits, but couldn’t get the runs to make them count in a loss to the Rivercats. Brain Cooper gave up 6 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks in 4.2 innings. Tony Torcato went 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and Kevin Frandsen went 3 for 5 with a double to lead the offense.

Norwich simply blasted Trenton. Patrick Misch went 7 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and a walk while striking out 5. Carlos Valderrama and Chris Curry both went deep in the 5th inning, Valderrama’s a solo shot while Curry plated 3. Fred Lewis went 1 for 3 with 3 RBI with 2 sac flies.

The Giants held off the Quakes, who scored 2 runs in the 9th off of Jon Coutlangus, but still fell 1 run short of getting the game into extras. Jesse Floyd went 6 innings, giving up a run on 5 hits and 2 walks. Ben Cox, recently arrived from the Nationals in the Deivi Cruz trade, gave up a 1 run homer in a 2 inning stint, the homer the only hit and no walks while striking out 3. Brian Buscher went 3 for 4.

Salem-Keizer moved into a first place tie with Vancouver as the season winds down and they prepare to meet for the season ending series in Vancouver beginning Monday. The winning runs came off the bat of Jose Yens, as he doubled home Michael Mooney and Mark Minicozzi. Starter Dave McKae went 5.2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits and a walk while striking out 7. But the bullpen came up big to keep it close enough for the offense to win.
