Giants Options Clear Up

The 2006 roster picture just got a little clearer, though not in an unexpected way. The Giants picked up the options of Winn and Schmidt for the 2006 season, while Durham, Alou and Hawkins all choose to stay in San Francisco.

The Giants picked up the options of center fielder Randy Winn and ace pitcher Jason Schmidt for the 2006 season. Meanwhile, second baseman Ray Durham, outfielder Moises Alou and reliever LaTroy Hawkins all pick up their player options to remain Giants.

The Giants have indicated that they will discuss an extension with Winn, who was acquired on July 30 from the Seattle Mariners for catcher Yorvit Torealba and pitcher Jesse Foppert. Winn, who will make $5 million with the club option, hit .358 with 14 home runs over the final two months of the season with the Giants.

Schmidt, who had been discussed frequently in possible trades, was picked up despite suffering an injury racked season. He had a 4.40 ERA and a 12-7 record. Since 2003, he has the 5th most wins with 47, and 3rd most strikeouts with 624. Schmidt’s option is for $10 million, and had it been bought out, it would’ve cost $3 million.

Durham will make $7 million with his player option. Durham, whose career with the Giants since signing as a free agent before the 2003 season has been marred by frequent injuries, had his healthiest year, playing in 142 games through a few injuries. He hit .290 with 12 home runs while being moved out of the leadoff spot and hitting mostly in the #5 slot.

Moises Alou signed with the Giants prior to the 2005 season to play for his father Felipe. Alou said before the season he’d come back for a second season with the Giants if they didn’t win the World Series, and a day after the Chicago White Sox won it instead, Moises proved to be true to his word. Moises, while serving as the primary Giants slugger in the absence of Barry Bonds, batted .321 on the year with 19 home runs. Moises will make $6 million.

Hawkins, who came to the Giants in a trade for Jerome Williams and David Aardsma, Hawkins appeared in 45 games for the Giants after the trade, missing time to injury. He had a 1-4 record with 2 saves and 5 blown saves while posting a 4.10 ERA with 30 strikeouts and 17 walks in 37.1 innings. He'll make $3.5M in 2006.
