Wright, Greene Make Giants; Others Sent Down

The Giants roster picture just got a lot clearer, but some new questions have arisen in their place. As Felipe Alou has announced that Todd Greene and Jamey Wright have made the Opening Day roster, he didn't announce whether Wright would be the 5th starter or a reliever. He also made no hints as to which two Giants would be removed from the roster to make room for them. Meanwhile, Valdez, Hennessey and Ortmeier were all sent to the minors.

Felipe Alou announced after Monday’s Spring Training game that non-roster catcher Todd Greene and pitcher Jamey Wright have made the Opening Day roster, just as it was announced the Giants have optioned Brad Hennessey, Merkin Valdez and Dan Ortmeier to Fresno.

While the move cleared the roster picture up a lot, some big questions remain, however.

First, it has not been announced whether or not Wright will be the team’s 5th pitcher, or if Kevin Correia will take that job and Wright will be a reliever.

Also, since Wright and Greene are non-roster players, the Giants will have to move two players off of the 40 man roster to make room for them.  The Giants could trade players off of the roster, or they could waive players from the roster.  A waiver would expose the players to possibly be picked up by other teams, like pitcher Brian Burres was after being waived to make room for Jose Vizcaino.

It had been reported over the weekend that reliever Tyler Walker was on the trading block, and that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were interested in him.  Also on Monday, Todd Linden said that he expected to be traded, to find a better fit for him.

Alou also strongly hinted that outfielder Jason Ellison would make the Opening Day roster as the team’s 5th outfielder.

There are indications that the Giants plan to have Valdez work as the closer in Fresno after he was talked up as a future closer throughout Spring Training.

The moves leave the team with 28 players from the 40 man roster officially in camp, as well as 4 non-roster players (including Greene and Wright).  The Giants will need to pare the roster to 25 players by Sunday night.
