Minor League Notebook: April 8th

Two teams take the rain, but San Jose plays two and pulls out a sweep to remain undefeated. And then there's Fresno...*sigh* Yea, those Grizzlies. Well, it's Just Another Wet Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Las Vegas 7, Fresno 1

Starting pitching once again led to the downfall of the Grizzlies.  SP Matt Kinney gave up 5 runs on 9 hits and a walk in 4 innings.  Kinney is the third Fresno starting pitcher to give up at least 5 runs.  RP Merkin Valdez made his first appearance in Fresno this season, and gave up 2 unearned runs on a hit and 2 walks, and a 1 out error by 2B Kevin Frandsen.  RP Brian Wilson also made his first appearance, pitching a scoreless inning with a walk and a strikeout.

Frandsen also got his first hit of the season, a double that scored Fred Lewis for Fresno’s only run.  Frandsen went 2 for 4.  Fred Lewis played center for the first time this season, going 2 for 5 with a double, but also struck out 3 times.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Postponed Due to Rain

No makeup date has been announced yet.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Game 1: San Jose 6, Visalia 5 (7 Innings); Game 2: San Jose 2, Visalia 0 (7 Innings)

1B/CF/LF Pat Dobson led the way for the San Jose Giants to a sweep in Saturday’s doubleheader, going 3 for 3 and scoring 2 runs in Game 1, and going 1 for 3 with a double in game 2.  Dobson played first base in the first game, then started in center and moved to left in the nightcap.  In Game 2, the scoring came courtesy of solo home runs by 2B Mark Minicozzi and DH Steve HolmBrian Horwitz knocked in 2 runs in Game 1 with a double, going 1 for 2.  Horwitz went 0 for 3 in the nightcap, making for the first game he didn’t get a hit in, and dropping his batting average to .500.  SS Marcus Sanders played on the first game, going 1 for 3 with a stolen base (his second of the season), a caught stealing, was picked off once, and committed an error.

SP Juan Serrato started Game 2, and pitched 5 scoreless innings.  He walked 4 and gave up 2 hits while striking out three.  SP Anthony Moreno made the start in game 1, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, but allowing no runs against 7 strikeouts.  RP Brian Anderson got the save by pitching a scoreless 7th inning in the first game, giving up 2 hits but also striking out 2.  Specer Grogan picked up the save in Game 2, collecting three strikeouts and not allowing any baserunners in 2 innings of work.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Postponed Due to Rain

Well, Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods were doing their best to hold off Phil Mickel....er, okay, that was the only action going on in Augusta Saturday. Augusta is planning to makeup the game in a doubleheader Sunday.
