Minor League Notebook: April 18th

Dan Griffin. How did he last until the 4th round of the draft? He led NCAA in strikeout rate, and the Giants were still able to pick him up. Well, now he's part of Augusta's strong rotation, and he's dominating. Too bad some of the Giant offensive prospects have started hitting like they're facing him. It's Just Another Slumping-Offense Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Las Vegas 9, Fresno 5

Fresno's offense is starting to show signs of life despite losing two of it's top hitters, but the pitching continues to falter. CF Dan Ortmeier and 1B Chad Santos each collected 2 RBI, but it wasn't nearly enough. SP Matt Kinney gave up 5 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings, getting no strikeouts but giving up 3 home runs to take the loss.

2B Kevin Frandsen went 1 for 3 with a double, and got hit by a pitch for the second straight game. RP Erick Threets, who might be facing a suspension along with Santos for their role in a brawl in Monday's game, gave up 3 unearned runs thanks to a Santos throwing error. Santos also hit his 2nd home run of the year. RP Jeremy Accardo made his first Triple-A appearance since his demotion from San Francisco, and gave up 1 run on 2 hits and a walk, with 4 strikeouts in 2 innings.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Reading 3, Connecticut 0

SP Chris Begg had another good performance, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits and no walks in 6 innings, but Connecticut's offense was stifled by Reading SP Daniel Haigwood. Haigwood gave up 5 walks, but only 3 hits through 6 innings as Connecticut fell.

CF Clay Timpner went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He is now 6 for 14 in his last three games with a double, a triple and a walk, raising his average from .172 to .250 in 3 days. RF Nate Schierholtz went 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 strikeouts. He has 3 walks to 5 strikeouts in 39 at bats. Eddy Martinez-Esteve has 4 walks to 4 strikeouts in 39 at bats after going 1 for 3 with a walk as well.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - High Desert 4, San Jose 3 (10 Innings)

A strong start by SP Jesus Reina seemed to have the game in hand, but the bullpen let one slip away. Reina gave up just 1 run in 5 innings, but RP Ben Cox gave up 2 runs (1 unearned thanks to an error by CF Joey Dyche) in the 8th to give up the lead, and RP Tom King gave up a run in the 10th to lose it.

LF Pat Dobson went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. He's batting .306 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI on the season. DH Brian Horwitz went 2 for 3 to raise his average to a team high .375. SS Marcus Sanders went 0 for 5 and is 2 for 14 since returning from behing hit on the hand with a pitch.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Augusta 1, Charleston 0

Augusta's pitching led them to another victory, and SP Dan Griffin went another 4 scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 0.75. Griffin gave up 3 hits and 3 walks, but struck out 5. RP Sergio Romo got the victory with 3.2 IP of relieve, giaving up no walks and 3 hits while stirking out 3 to lower his ERA to 0.90. Wayne Foltin got the save with 1.1 innings of work, and his ERA remains at 0.00.

Augusta's lone run came when LF Jon Armitage walked to get on base. RF Michael Mooney singled him to 2nd, and C Andy Busch singled Armitage home. DH Alex Requena went 3 for 4 with stay at .356 on the season while 2B Kyle Haines went 2 for 3 with a .316 average at the bgottom of the order.
