Minor League Notebook: April 20th

San Jose looked like the team of last year with a big old fashioned blowout in the High Desert. Connecticut looked like the team of this year, with a sterling pitching performance and Eddy Martinez-Esteve leading the offense. Fresno looked like the team of too many nightmares gone by, with more pitching problems. And Augusta looked like the SF Giants of last week with a rainout. Just Another Day of Reminiscing in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Las Vegas 6, Fresno 4

Las Vegas, who swept the Grizzlies in 4 to start the season, visited Fresno and it seems like nothing's changed. SP Alfredo Simon gave up 5 runs on 9 hits and a walk in 5.1 innings, striking out just 1. RP Erick Threets gave up a run in 1.2 IP without giving up a hit, just one walk. RP Jack Taschner, making his first AAA appearance since his demotion, gave up 2 hits before getting an out to get out of the 8th, allowing that runner to score.

In the field, LF Fred Lewis started his first game since coming back from a hamstring injury, and went 0 for 1 with a strikeout and 4 walks, scoring 2 runs for the Grizzlies. 2B Kevin Frandsen went 3 for 5, while CF Dan Ortmeier went 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Connecticut 2, Trenton 1

Is it any surprise that pitching won another game for the Defenders? Today, it was SP Jonathan Sanchez going 5.1 inning and giving up just 1 run on 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 9. RP Jeff Petersen went 2.2 innings for the hold, while RP Joe Bateman collected his 4th save of the year while striking out 2 in the 9th.

Meanwhile, LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve continued to stay hot. He extended his season-long hitting streak to 13 with a 3 for 4 day, including a double, an RBI and a run scored. RF Randy Walter went 2 for 3, while DH Nate Schierholtz went 1 for 3 with an HBP.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 13, High Desert 5

San Jose looked like the team of last season, collecting 20 hits en route to a rout of the Mavericks. RF Brian Horwitz went 2 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI, and picked up a walk to raise his average to .400. DH Guillermo Rodriguez went 4 for 5 with a triple and 4 RBI. And LF John Bowker went 3 for 6 with a run and an RBI.

SP Juan Serrato ran into trouble, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 3 innings, but RP Adam Gardner went 3.0 hitless innings in relief to keep the game settled, giving up a walk while striking out 1. RP Ben Cox gave up a home run in the 7th, but RP Tom King also gave up no hits for the final 2 frames to keep the blowout from getting close.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Postponed Due To Rain
