Minor League Notebook: April 23rd

Fresno finally has the team pull together. 3 home runs and a nice starting pitcher performance in hitter friendly Tacoma. Meanwhile, the pitching falters in San Jose and Augusta. Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Fresno 7, Tacoma 2

In a day that was a long time coming, the Grizzlies had everything go right for once. SP Matt Kinney gave up 2 unearned runs over 5 innings on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7. The runs were unearned thanks to an error by CF Dan Ortmeier. RP Jeremy Accardo struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced in an inning of work, and RP Merkin Valdez struck out one and gave up a hit in the 9th.

At the plate, DH Adam Shabala continued to hit well, going 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI to raise his average to .388. But it was 3 home runs, one each by 1B Jed Hansen (2 for 4 on the day), SS Tomas De La Rosa (2 for 4) and RF Abraham Nunez (2 for 4) that powered the offense. LF Fred Lewis went 3 for 5 with a run scored to go to .345 on the year, and 3B Kevin Frandsen went 1 for 5 with a run scored to lower his average to .329.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Postponed Due to Rain

No makeup date has been announced.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Lake Elsinore 10, San Jose 7

San Jose was unable to complete the sweep of the team they beat for the California League title last September. SP Jesus Reina gave up more walks (5) than hits (4) en route to giving up 6 runs in 2.2 innings, raising his ERA to 4.58. All those runs only served to tie the game in the 3rd, but RP Guillermo Rodriguez gave up 3 more in an inning of work to take the loss, raising his ERA to 9.82.

LF John Bowker was the offensive star of the day, going 3 for 4 with a double and a home run, netting 3 RBI and raising his average to .269. C Steve Holm and CF Joesph Dyche each went 2 for 5. RF Brian Horwitz went 1 for 4 with a double and a walk while striking out once.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Rome 7, Augusta 6 (10 Innings)

Augusta lost their 2nd 10 inning affair with the Braves in 3 games on Sunday. SP Joe Martinez had his worst start of the season, giving up 6 runs on 9 hits and a walk in 4.1 innings, but the GreenJackets had battled back to tie the game. RP Wayne Foltin pitched the 9th without incident, but walked the leadoff batter in the 10th. He was bunted over to second, and then Foltin gave up a double to Rome CF Jordan Schafer to take the loss.

2B Anthony Contreras went 3 for 6, scoring 3 runs and hitting a double, raising his average to .433 on the year. SS Kyle Haines went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. CF Alex Requena went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, 2 BB and 2 SB. DH Antoan Richardson went 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base as well. 3B Aaron Hornostaj went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. LF Ben Copeland went 0 for 5 with a walk and a strikeout to lower his average to .167.
