Minor League Notebook: April 25th

San Jose's bullpen gets taxed, as they go to extra innings for the second straight night and the starter only went 3 innings...but the game would be hard fought. Fresno sees a momentum shift a couple of ways in the 9th inning (and Fresno wasn't batting last), while Connecticut's offense wakes up just in time.

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Tacoma 5, Fresno 4

The 9th inning saw the momentum swing wildly between the Grizzlies and Rainers. With Tacoma up 3-2, the Grizzlies got the first two runners on, and singles by C Eliezer Alfonzo and LF Fred Lewis plated two runs to put Fresno ahead. But RP Matt Anderson came on, and gave up a single, a wild pitch and a double to tie the game, then a sacrifice bunt and a single to take the loss.

SP Alfredo Simon put up a solid effort, going 6 innings and giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and no walks while striking out 4. Lewis went 2 for 5, including a leadoff home run. 3B Kevin Frandsen went 1 for 4, and both Lewis and Frandsen are batting .333 on the season now.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Connecticut 5, Reading 4

Connecticut's offense finally broke out of its slump late, and just late enough to break the Defenders' losing streak of 2 games. 2B Derin McMains hit leadoff and went 2 for 5 with a 3 run home run and 4 RBI overall, with the home run a walkoff affair in the 9th inning. The home run earned a win for Billy Sadler, who allowed no baserunners through 2 innings, and struck out 2. SP Pat Misch was left without a decision after allowing just an unearned run over 6 innings, striking out 4 while allowing 6 hits and a walk.

RF Nate Schierholtz went 2 for 4 while picking up the only RBI that McMains didn't get in the second inning. Justin Knoedler went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored. CF Clay Timpner went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Modesto 3, San Jose 2 (10 Innings)

San Jose lost its second extra inning affair in a row. SP Alexander Hinshaw had some early problems, including walking in a run in the first innings, but he eventually steadied out, and RP Brooks McNiven pitched a strong 4 innings of relief after that, but San Jose's offense had some problems punching through. Meanwhile RP Adam Gardner couldn't hold the line in the 10th, giving up a one out single and steal, and then another single to right field that scored the winning run.

DH Brian Horwitz kept up his hot hitting with a 2 for 4 day and one of the Giants' 2 RBI. However, C Guillermo Rodriguez cooled off with an 0 for 5 day, despite hitting the ball hard every time up. CF Pat Dobson had a double on a 1 for 4 day with a walk.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Suspended

The game was suspended in the middle of the 5th with the game tied at 5. It should be finished tomorrow.
