Minor League Notebook: April 26th

Fresno didn't have a game to play today, while Augusta got rained out...but there was plenty of action in the games that were played. San Jose got into a pitching duel, with emerging prospect Nick Pereira on the mound, while Connecticut's game saw 8 runs scored in the 9th inning for a wild finish (and guess how many were earned?). Just Another Half-Sized Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - No Game Scheduled

Fresno deserved a day off, anyway.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Reading 8, Connecticut 2

RP Joe Bateman's struggles continue, as Bateman gave up 4 runs in the 9th as part of a 6 run Reading rally to win the game late. The rally was assisted by two errors, one each by 2B Derin McMains and 3B Aaron Sisk, resulting in 5 of the 6 runs being unearned. Bateman gave up the runs on 3 hits and a hit-batter while striking out one batter for the only out he got. RP Matt Palmer allowed 3 inherited runners to score and gave up 2 unearned runs of his own in the inning.

Connecticut got its own runs unearned in the bottom of the 9th, as C Brian Munhall hit into a bases loaded force attempt, but an error allowed two runs to come in. The Defenders collected only 4 hits, and 2 of them came in that inning. LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve went 1 for 4. RF Nate Schierholtz went 1 for 3 with a walk and strikeout. SP Jesse Floyd went 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits and a walk while striking out 6, but took the loss.

RP Jonathan Sanchez made his 2nd relief appearance, and fared better. He went 1.0 IP with a hit and 2 strikeouts, and didn't allow any runs to lower his ERA to 2.00.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 2, Modesto 1

A cold night with the wind blowing in resulted in a tough night for hitters in San Jose, but the Giants prevailed in a pitcher's duel. SP Nick Pereira gave up a leadoff triple followed by a error by 3B Simon Klink (one of three in the game) to let an earned run come in, but that would be all he allowed. Pereira went 6 innings, and gave up only 2 hits and walked none while striking out 6. He ERA still rose to 1.12 thanks to the run.

Pereira didn't get the win, as the Giants couldn't get anything going against Modesto SP Matt Daley until the 7th inning. Klink walked and was sacrificed over to 2nd. Daley was replaced, and then with 2 out, 2B Mark Minicozzi singled home Klink to tie the game. Minicozzi stole 2nd, and then advanced to third on a throwing error on the stolen base, and SS Marcus Sanders collected a clutch single to drive Minicozzi home for the win.

RP Justin Hedrick collected the save with 2 strong innings, giving up just a hit while striking out 2. RP Spencer Grogan got the win with a scoreless 7th inning, giving up a single. LF John Bowker went 1 for 4 with a double and 2 strikeouts. C Todd Jennings went 1 for 3 with a double and the sacrifice in the 7th.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Postponed Due to Rain

Augusta will play a 'Three-Halves Header' on Thursday, finishing Tuesday's suspended game starting from the 5th inning, and then makeup Wednesday's postponed game in a 7 inning affair.
