Minor League Notebook: April 28th

The Grizzlies are down a star infielder, how would they respond? Would you believe the pitching came through? Meanwhile, the hitting in Connecticut has been slumping...could they wake up? Noah Lowry makes the rehab start in San Jose, and Augusta is doomed to make another '3-Halves-Header.' Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Fresno 8, Portland 3

With Kevin Frandsen in the majors, Fresno was able to compensate offensively, partially thanks to the return of 1B Chad Santos. Santos hit his 4th home run of the year in the 5th inning in his first game back from a 5 game suspension for his part in a brawl with Tacoma. LF Fred Lewis hit his 3rd of the year, a 2 run shot in the 5th inning. CF Dan Ortmeier added his 2nd of the year in the 9th, a solo shot. Lewis was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI on the night. 3B Adam Shabala, starting for the now-suspension serving Jed Hansen, went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and a double.

SP Matt Kinney got the win, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits and 5 walks through 5 innings. RP Erick Threets pitched the 8th, giving up just a walk, while RP Merkin Valdez repeated that in the 9th (but didn't get a save).

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - New Hampshire 5, Connecticut 0

Connecticut's offense continued to falter, managing only 4 hits on the day in a listless loss at New Hampshire. RF Nate Schierholtz was the only hitter looking good, going 2 for 4 with a double and a strikeout, raising his average to .304. CF Clay Timpner went 1 for 4, while 3B Brian Buscher got the other hit. 1B Travis Ishikawa returned and went 0 for 3 with the only walk the Defenders drew, while LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve went 0 for 4 and his average dropped to .300.

SP Garret Broshuis went 5.1 innings and took the loss, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits and no walks with 6 strikeouts. RP Mike Musgrave gave up 2 runs in 2.2 innings on 3 hits (1 home run).

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 6, High Desert 2

The story of this game was the return of SP Noah Lowry to San Jose on a rehab start. Lowry went 4.2 scoreless innings on his 80 pitch limit, giving up 5 hits and a walk while striking out 9. RP Tom King came in and went 2.1 hitless innings of relief, walking just one and getting the win.

Offensively, SS Marcus Sanders woke up from his slump following a hand injury, going 3 for 5 with a double and triple, scoring 2 runs and stealing a base, only his 4th of the year. (He also made his 4th error of the year). 2B Mark Minicozzi went 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored, a triple and 2 RBI on the night. RF Brian Horwitz went 1 for 4 with an RBI and his average continued to fall down to .347.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Suspended at the end of 3 innings, Augusta 1, Rome 0

A day after completing a suspended game in a '3-Halves-Header,' Augusta finds another game interrupted. The date that this game will be finished has not be announced.
