Minor League Notebook: May 1st

15 hits. The Giants farm system, 4 teams, managed just 15 hits! Not that the major league team did much better on May Day, but still. Good thing there was that emerging young pitcher in San Jose going, or else the day would've been a total loss. Who was it? Find out inside. Just Another (lackluster offensive) Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Tucson 8, Fresno 3

Well, at least SP Alfredo Simon didn't walk anyone. Simon allowed 7 runs on 12 hits in 5 innings, giving up 2 home runs, and Fresno couldn't recover. Newcomer RP Carlos Hines (acquired in the Tyler Walker deal) did make a successful debut for the Grizzlies, giving up 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 3 in 2.0 innings. RP Merkin Valdez gave up 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks in the 9th.

Fresno's offense was limited to only 4 hits. LF Fred Lewis was 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, and 2 runs scored. CF Dan Ortmeier was 1 for 3 with a double of his own, a sacrifice fly, and 2 RBI.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Portland 5, Connecticut 0

Well, if Fresno's 4 hit performance was bad, Connecticut's 2 hit offensive production was horrid. LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve (1 for 3) and SS Jake Wald (1 for 3) got the only two hits the Defenders could manage, both singles off of Portland SP Kason Gabbard. Connecticut SP Jesse Floyd gave up 3 runs, 1 earned, off of 4 hits and a walk in 5 innings pitched, aided by errors by Wald and C Justin Knoedler.

RP Joe Bateman came back from some bad outings to go 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up 2 hits while striking out 1. RP Geno Espineli gave up 2 runs on 2 hits in 0.2 IP. He also struck out 1.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 5, Visalia 3

Well, at least San Jose's offense was alive, but the story of the night was SP Nick Pereira. Pereira won his 4th game in 5 starts, shutting out the Oaks for 6 innings, giving up 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8. He hasn't allowed a runner to score in 11 innings, since the first inning of his last start, and now owns a 0.90 ERA with 31 strikeouts against 5 walks in 30 innings. RP Ben Cox gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1.1 innings of relief, but it wasn't enough to give up the lead. RP Justin Hedrick gave up a walk in 0.2 IP of work and is still unscored upon this season. RP Brian Anderson got his 5th save, striking out 2 in a scoreless 9th.

SS Marcus Sanders went 0 for 2, but got on base with 2 walks, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. RF Brian Horwitz went 2 for 2 with a run scored, a walk and 2 RBI, raising his average to .366.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Rome 8, Augusta 1

Back to the lack of offense, Augusta also managed just 2 hits in a loss to the Braves. Rome SP Jo-Jo Reyes gave up just one hit, a walk, and 1 run while striking out 11. The run came in in the first, as LF Ben Copeland took a 1 out walk, got to third on two consecutive wild pitches, and scored and a groundout by 3B Pablo Sandoval.

SP Ben Nieto went 3.1 innings, giving up 5 runs, 4 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5, and his ERA is up to 12.27 on the season. RP Buck Cody went 3.0 IP, giving up 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.
