Minor League Notebook: May 13th

Things are turning around for Augusta left fielder Ben Copeland, as he had another big day for the GreenJackets. The right fielder there isn't doing so poorly either. San Jose stays in first. And Connecticut plays in an ultimate pitcher's duel, going 5 extra innings and ending in a 1-0 game...and that was Game 1 of a Double Header! Just Another Day In The Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Oklahoma 3, Fresno 1

3B Adam Shabala - 3-4, 1 2B (13), 1 RBI, .358
SS Kevin Frandsen - 0-3, .321
LF Fred Lewis - 1-4, 2 SO, .296
2B-SS Tomas De La Rosa - 1-4, 1 2B (9), .259
CF Clay Timpner - 1-4, 1 2B (1), .240
SP Michael Tejera - 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 2.59
RP Jeff Miller - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 3.14; L, 1-1
RP Jack Taschner - 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 5.40

Despite another strong start by Tejera, Fresno couldn't take advantage of it and win. They managed 9 hits, but only got one run on a Shabala RBI single in the 6th. Frandsen left the game after a 6th inning pop-up for as-yet undisclosed reasons. Miller took the loss, but it was Taschner who allowed the run to score, coming in with a man on first and one out. Taschner got a strikeout, then gave up a single and double to allow both runs in.

Notes: Fresno is 14-22, and fell to 8.5 games behind Las Vegas in the Pacific South. They are alone in last place.

Saturday's doubleheader ended up going 18 innings, despite games being only 7 innings of regulation play. Game 1 featured a strong pitching duel, with Floyd and Sanchez starring. The winning run cam thanks to Walter getting on base on a 2 out error, and then two singles following it to take the game.

Meanwhile, Palmer in game 2 couldn't stop New Britain from scoring, and they had three errors in the process. The offense didn't help, managing 2 runs in the first off of 3 hits and a hit by pitch. The Defenders didn't get another hit the rest of the way, only managing 2 walks of offense off of New Britain starter Nick Blackburn, who won his second game of the year and has a 5.65 ERA

Notes: Connecticut is 21-13, and still in first place in the Northern division of the Eastern League. 2nd Place Portland remained 1.5 games back after not playing today.

San Jose lived on some strong hitting by the bottom half of the order. A 2 RBI double by Wagner highlighted a 4 run 7th inning that broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Giants the win. 4 innings of scoreless relief pitching by RP Darren Sack, Cox and King also keyed the victory. The three of them allowed just 2 hits and a walk between them.

Notes: San Jose rose to 23-11, and is still 4.5 games ahead of Modesto for first place in the North Division of the California League.

Notes: Augusta is 19-14, and has now climbed to a tie for 2nd place in the Southern division of the SAL, percentage points ahead of Asheville. They are both 5 games behind first place Rome.
