Minor League Notebook: May 14th

Connecticut got wet and suffered another rainout, but Augusta played enough for both teams. Augusta went 15 innings, with timely hitting and a couple of gems out of the bullpen to keep the game going and going. Meanwhile, San Jose is simply playing like a first place team. They may be the best baseball team in the Bay Area right now. How about San Jose build THEM a stadium, huh? Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Oklahoma 2, Fresno 1

CF Clay Timpner - 1-3, 1 RBI,1 BB, 1 SO, 1 CS (1), .250
3B Jed Hansen - 1-3, 1 2B (4), 1 BB, .243
DH Justin Knoedler - 1-3, 1 R, .167
SP Matt Kinney - 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 SO, 4.57
RP Brian Wilson - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 4.32; BS, 1; L, 1-2

Matt Kinney's best start of the year ended up wasted as rehabbing major leaguer Wilson returned to Fresno and couldn't get the job done. With a 1-0 lead, Wilson got a ground out, but then gave up a single, a steal and a triple consecutively. A sacrfice fly scored the winning run before Wilson got a fly out to end the 8th. Timpner continued to perform pretty well under a callup from AA as he knocked in Fresno's only run with a groundout in the 3rd.

Notes: Fresno lost its 8th game in the last 9 and fell to 14-23, 9 games behind Las Vegas in the Pacific South. Kevin Frandsen did not play, a day after being taken out early from a game. No word on his status has been released.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Postponed due to rain

The Eastern League is wet. No makeup date as been announced.

Notes: Connecticut remains at 21-13 and is in first place in the Northern division. The remain 1.5 games ahead of Portland, who had a double header rained out.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 5, Lake Elsinore 1

DH Guillermo Rodriguez - 3-4, 1 R, 1 HR (5), 3 RBI, .419
SS Marcus Sanders - 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B (6), 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 SB (12), 1 E (7), .194
3B Simon Kllink - 2-4, 1 R, 1 SO, .232
CF Joey Dyche - 1-3, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 CS (3), .243
2B Mark Minicozzi - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 SB (2), .286
SP Jesus Reina - 5.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 4.96; W, 2-0
RP Brooks McNiven - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 2.21; H, 3
RP Justin Hedrick - 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1.56; S, 3

It was nothing but a solid day for the defending California League champions. Reina had one of his best starts of the year, allowing just 1 run on the day. McNiven and Hedrick combined to keep the San Jose bullplen going strong. The dark note on the game was C Todd Jennings, who was hit in the face by a pitch in the first inning. No word on his status is yet available.

Notes: San Jose is 24-11, and extended its lead over 2nd place Modesto to 5.5 games. The win was their 4th straight and 6th out of 7.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Augusta 6, Greensboro 5 (15 Innings)

1B Pablo Sandoval - 3-7, 2 2B (7), 2 RBI, 3 SO, .282
LF Ben Copeland - 2-7, 2 R, .265
RF Michael Mooney - 2-6, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, .311
C Barry Gunther - 3-7, 1 R, 1 SO, 1 PB, .231
SS David Maroul - 2-7, 1 2B (2), 3 RBI, 1 SO, .275
3B Anthony Contreras - 2-6, 1 BB, 1 SO, .382
CF Antoan Richardson - 2-7, 2 SO, .222
SP Dan Griffin - 5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 2 HR, 4.11
RP Ricky Bauer - 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 3.86
RP Wayne Foltin - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 2.35
RP David Quinowski - 4.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 SO, 2.57
RP Bryan Millikan - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 4.12; W, 1-0

A spectacular bullpen performance and timely hitting helped the GreenJackets outlast the Grasshoppers. Griffin suffered another poor start, giving up a 2 run 1st inning homer and a solo shot in the 3rd, but Ricky Bauer came in and pitched 4 scoreless innings of relief to steady the game. Meanwhile a 6th inning double by Maroul plated 2 runs to tie the game. In the 10th, Foltin gave up a run after a passed ball on a strikeout allowed a runner to get to first. That runner was out on a groundout, but that allowed another runner on. A walk and a single then scored the run. But in the bottom of the 10th, Copeland led off with a single and Sandoval followed with a double, and Copeland was in place to score on a Jose Yens groundout. Then it was time for Quinowski to go 4 innings of hitless relief, and in the 15th, Contreras, Gunther and Maroul all singled with Maroul knocking in the winning run.

Notes: Augusta is 20-14, and is 4.5 games behind the idle Rome Braves. They are only a half game ahead of third place Asheville.
