Minor League Notebook: May 18th

San Jose takes the day off, but there is another first place team in the system...the oft-forgotten Defenders, who made up one of their rainouts in a double header today. And both games went into extra innings. 2 days, 3 extra-inning games. Boy, how are the arms doing? Don't ask about the arms in Fresno, though. Ouch! Just Another Day in the Minors.

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Iowa 8, Fresno 2

CF Clay Timpner - 3-5, 1 R, .317
SS Tomas De La Rosa - 2-5, 1 R, 2 SO, 3 E (9), .268
RF Abe Nunez - 1-4, 1 3B, 2 RBI, .228
C Justin Knoedler - 1-4, 1 SB (2), .192
SP Alfredo Simon - 5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO, 5.44; L, 0-5
RP Matt Anderson - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 9.19
RP Carlos Hines - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 0.00 ERA
RP Brian Wilson - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 3.18

Once again, it was pitching that fell Fresno as Simon picked up his 5th loss and still hasn't won a game on the year. Hines gave up his first run with the Grizzlies on the year, but it was unearned thanks to one of De La Rosa's three errors. On the bright side, Wilson pitched another solid inning as he rehabs, just giving up a single and striking out 1.

Notes: Fresno is 15-25, and dropped to 10 games behind 1st place Las Vegas. The Grizzlies are in last place in the 4 team division.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Game 1 - Connecticut 3, Binghamton 2 (8 Innings); Game 2 - Connecticut 2, Binghamton 1 (10 Innings)

Game 1:
RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-4, 1 R, .267
3B Brian Buscher - 1-1, 2 R, 3 BB, .239
1B Travis Ishikawa - 1-4, 1 2B (6), 1 RBI, 2 SO, .236
2B Aaron Sisk - 1-3, 1 RBI, 2 SO, .217
SP Garrett Broshuis - 7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO, 1 WP, 1.96
RP Jason Waddell - 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 5.25;
RP R.D. Spiehs - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3.65; W, 1-0

Game 2
CF Alex Requena - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR (1), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 CS (1), .257
3B Brian Buscher - 2-4, 1 SO, 1 E (4), .248

RP Geno Espineli - 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 4.60
RP R.D. Spiehs - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3.14; W, 2-0

Spiehs came into Thursday with no decisions in 10 relief appearances, but came out with 2 wins and had a hand in the offense in one as Connecticut played it's 2nd and 3rd extra inning games in a row. In a doubleheader like Thursday's, games are scheduled to go only 7 innings. In Game 1, Ishikawa got the game winning 2 out hit with the only extra base hit of the Defenders in the game, a double. In Game 2, after a Wald double, Spiehs laided down a sacrifice bunt. The pitcher then intentionally walked Requena and Schierholtz, but threw a wild pitch to Buscher which scored the winning run.

Notes: Connecticut is 23-14 after sweeping the doubleheader, raising them to 3.5 games ahead of second place Portland.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - No Game Scheduled

Notes: San Jose is 27-11, and is safely 8.5 games ahead of 2nd place Modesto in the North division.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - West Virginia 8, Augusta 4

RF Michael Mooney - 3-5, 1 R, 1 HR (5), 3 RBI, .316
2B Eugenio Velez - 2-3, 1 BB, .309
3B Anthony Contreras - 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B (7), 1 SB (6), .358
LF Ben Copeland - 1-5, 1 R, 1 SO, .286
SS David Maroul - 1-4, 1 2B (3), 1 SO, 2 E (3), .273
SP Ronnie Ray - 2.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 3.60; L, 3-2
RP Bryan Millikan - 2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO, 4.57
RP Ricky Bauer - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 3.00

Ray's first bad start put Augusta too far behind to catch up in this one. Ray's nightmare 3rd inning came after giving up 2 singles, a triple and a groundout to star the inning. 2 straight errors by Maroul on the next two hitters extended the inning. After a double, Ray was gone.

Notes: Augusta is now 21-17, and is 7.5 games behind first place Rome in third place. Mooney homered in his 2nd straight game, giving him 5 on the year. That leads Augusta. 2nd place is Jonathan Armitage with 2. Copeland has a 9 game hitting streak.
