Minor League Notebook: May 28th

How bad was Sunday's starting pitching? Combined in the farm system, starting pitchers gave up 28 runs in 16.1 innings (and that doesn't include 6 in 3.2 innings by Jamey Wright in the majors!)! Yikes! It's Just Another Mermorial Day not to be remembered on the mound in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Tucson 12, Fresno 5

SS Tim Hutting - 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, .333
2B Aaron Hornostaj - 2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .229
CF Dan Ortmeier - 2-5, 1 2B (9), 1 SO, .284
3B Juan Melo - 1-5, 1 2B (4), 2 RBI, 1 E (4), .220
LF Fred Lewis - 0-3, 2 BB, 1 SO, .268
SP Alfredo Simon - 1.1 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 3 HR, 1 WP, 6.75; L, 0-6
RP Pedro Liriano - 3.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 1 WP, 1 HBP, 6.75
RP Matt Anderson - 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 SO, 7.20

Simon remained winless as he got hammered in the 2nd inning sending Fresno to another loss. Simon gave up 3 home runs, all in the 2nd inning, as he allowed 8 runs on his record. Simon went to his 6th loss, and his ERA shot up even higher to 6.75 from 5.51.

Notes: Fresno fell to 22-28, and back to 6 games behind 1st place Las Vegas.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Reading 10, Connecticut 1

CF Clay Timpner - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR (1), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .223
RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-4, 2 SO, .256
C Brian Munhall - 1-3, 1 SO, .217
SP Garrett Broshuis - 3.1 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 2 HR, 1 WP, 3.20; L, 2-2
RP Mike Musgrave - 3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO, 5.48
RP R.D. Spiehs - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 3.18

On Sunday, it was an uncharacteristically bad start by Broshuis, who had been one of the most consistent starters in Double-A, that doomed the Defenders. Broshuis just got hit hard into the 4th before getting pulled. The only bright spot for the Defenders was Timpner's first home run of the year, a 4th inning solo shot.

Notes: Connecticut fell out of first place, dropping to 26-21, and a half game behind Portland in the division.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Modesto 4, San Jose 0

RF Brian Horwitz - 2-3, 1 2B (7), 1 HBP, .320
3B Simon Klink - 2-3, 1 2B (7), 1 SO, .254
CF Pat Dobson - 1-2, 1 BB, .269
SS Marcus Sanders - 0-4, 1 SO, 1 E (13), .215
SP Nick Pereira - 7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO, 1 HR, 1 HBP, 1 E (1), 1.93; L, 6-1
RP Justin Hedrick - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1.46

Well, it was just one of those days. Pereira gave up 3 runs in the first inning, including a triple and a 2 run homer, to take his first loss of the season. Meanwhile, San Jose just coulding get it's offense going despite 7 hits, including doubles by Horwitz and Klink.

Notes: San Jose fell to 30-19 with the loss, and being the 4th straight loss to Modesto, their lead over 2nd place Modesto has shrunk to just 4 games. The teams meet for one more matchup on Monday in San Jose.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Greenville 15, Augusta 3

3B David Maroul - 2-4, 1 SO, .301
RF Michael Mooney - 1-4, 2 SO, .322
1B Pablo Sandoval - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B (10), .261
LF Ben Copeland - 1-3, 1 BB, 1 SO, .262
2B Eugenio Velez - 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B (6), 1 RBI, .276
SS Anthony Contreras - 0-4, 1 SO, 1 E (3), .323
SP Ronnie Ray - 4.2 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 2 HR, 1 WP, 4.26; L, 4-3
RP Matthew Minor - 0.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 6.75
RP Buck Cody - 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO, 1 WP, 1 HBP, 5.82

Well, yea, it was that kind of day for starting pitchers up and down the system. Ray's ERA jumped from 3.52 to 4.26 with this start. At least Augusta mounted some scattered offense, with Velez hitting an RBI triple in the 4th and scoring on the next play to account for 2/3rds of Augusta's runs, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Notes: Augusta fell to 26-22, but remains in second place and 7.5 games back of first place Rome. They are a half game ahead of Asheville and Charelston, who are tied for 3rd.
