Minor League Notebook: June 2nd

Augusta got in half a doubleheader, but Game 2 was suspended due to rain. In San Jose, they suspended the game because it was just too damn late to keep playing. In Connecticut, suspensions were handed down to 7 players from last week's brawl. And in Fresno, well, the quality of the pitching requires suspension of disbelief! Just Another Suspended Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Fresno 2, Tucson 0

3B Juan Melo - 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR (4), 2 RBI, 1 BB, .229
1B Chad Santos - 1-4, 1 2B (9), 2 SO, .259
LF Fred Lewis - 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, .266
RF Todd Linden - 0-4, 1 SO, .259
C Justin Knoedler - 0-2, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HBP, .203
SP Pedro Liriano - 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO, 5.40; W, 1-2
RP Brandon Villafuerte - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 4.33; H, 3
RP Jack Taschner - 2.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 3.12; S, 4

The pitching is coming around for Fresno. Liriano's good start just powered a Fresno shutout, although Frenso needed it with their hitting, and to that end, Liriano was 50% of the scoring. Liriano singled to lead off the third, setting up a 2 run homer by Melo to score the game's only runs.

Notes: Fresno is 24-31, and is 6.5 games back of Tucson for first place.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Portland 10, Connecticut 1 (5 Innings)

CF Clay Timpner - 1-3, 1 R, .236
DH Tyler Von Schell - 1-1, 1 BB, .259
1B Travis Ishikawa - 0-1, 1 BB, .260
RF Nate Schierholtz - 0-3, 2 SO, 1 E (4), .250
SP Garrett Broshuis - 2.1 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 1 E (2), 1 WP, 1 HBP, 4.42; L, 2-3
RP Mike Musgrave - 2.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 5.62

No, it wasn't the mercy rule, it was rain that shortened this game. Broshuis was hit hard for the second straight start (no telling if moisture had anything to do with it). Even the Defender's only run was a gift. Timpner led off the game by getting on with an error, then got all the way to third on a bunt, and scored on a wild pitch.

Notes: Connecticut is 27-25, and fell to 3 games behind first place Portland. Eliezer Alfonzo was called up to the major leagues on Friday, to replace the injured Mike Matheny. News came out that 7 Defenders players were suspended as a part of the brawl with Reading last week. Alfonzo got 4 games, and 3 games were handed out a piece to Von Schell, Schierholtz, Oscar Montero, Mike Musgrave, Brian Buscher, and Aaron Sisk.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Suspended after 13 innings; San Jose 6, Bakersfield 6

Friday's game hit the curfew; no new innings are allowed to start after 11:50 PM, so this game will be continued at a later date, which will be announced on Sunday. We will display the final stats then. SP Nick Pereira went 5 innings in this one, giving up 4 hits in 7 innings, allowing no walks while striking out 2, and his ERA jumped to 2.33. Bakersfield answered each San Jose scoring attempt, as both teams scored 4 runs in the 4th, and 2 more in the 9th to keep it even.

Notes: San Jose is 33-21, and is 5 games ahead of 2nd place Modesto.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Game 1 - Augusta 8, Asheville 0 (7 Innings); Game 2 - Suspended in the 1st Inning

Game 1
LF Ben Copeland - 2-4, 1 R, 1 3B (5), 3 RBI, .261
2B Eugenio Velez - 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B (13), 1 RBI, 1 SB (17), .283
DH Jose Yens - 3-3, 2 R, .250
SS Anthony Contreras - 1-4, 1 R, 1 SB (7), 1 E (6), .331
RF Michael Mooney - 0-1, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SF, .306
1B Pablo Sandoval - 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B (1), 1 SO, .256
RP Ryan Shaver - 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 SO, 2.57; W, 4-3

Friday's doubleheader started out so well for Augusta, only to be interrupted by Rain. Shaver starter the afternoon with a 3 hit shutout over the full 7 innings, and Augusta's offense sparked up, with the big hits being two triples, one leading to a run (Sandoval's in the 3rd, scoring on Mooney's sacrifice fly), and one knocking one in (Copeland's in the 4th, knocking in Yens). Game 2 was suspended in the first inning with Augusta up 1-0. No stats were available.
