Minor League Notebook: June 6th-7th

The draft kept SFDugout.com busy, but we're back to cover what we missed. And what'd we miss? A couple of returns to Fresno. And a star pitcher returns to form in San Jose. Just Another (couple of) Day(s) in the Minors!

June 6

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Salt Lake 3, Fresno 2

DH Dan Ortmeier - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B (12), 1 3B (2), 1 SO, .263
SS Jose Flores - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR (1), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .250
LF Fred Lewis - 1-4, 1 2B (9), 1 BB, .262
RF Todd Linden - 0-3, 1 BB, 2 SO, .215
SP Michael Tejera - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 2.85; L, 3-3
RP Erick Threets - 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 3.55
RP Merkin Valdez - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 4.57

Tejera didn't have a bad start, per se, but it was just bad enough. The big hit was a 2 out double by Howie Kendrick with 2 men on in the 3rd that scored 2 runs. The good news was solid outing from Threets and Valdez, both of whom had been not so solid lately.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Harrisburg 3, Connecticut 2

2B Aaron Sisk - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR (5), 2 RBI, .204
RF Randy Walter - 2-3, 1 BB, 2 SB (5), .224
CF Clay Timpner - 1-4, 1 SB (8), .233
1B Travis Ishikawa - 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, .258
SP Matt Palmer - 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1.09
RP Scott Munter - 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO, 3.38; L, 0-1
RP Billy Sadler - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2.57

A day after it looked like Munter's sinker was back, he had a rough outing. Of the four outs he got, only 1 was on a ground ball, and none of the hits he gave up were ground balls. He only gave up 1 run, but with Connecticut's wilting offense, it was enough to be the difference in the loss.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Modesto 5, San Jose 2

RF Michael Wagner - 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B (7), 1 SO, .254
CF Joey Dyche - 1-5, 2 SO, .228
3B Julio Cordido - 1-3, 1 BB, 1 SO, .262
DH Brian Horwitz - 1-4, .326
LF John Bowker - 0-3, 1 BB, 2 SO, .252
SP Brooks McNiven - 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 1 BK, 2.92
RP Ben Cox - 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 3 SO, 3.63; BS, 3; L, 3-2
RP Adam Gardner - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 4.71
RP Tom King - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2.76

Cox just had one of those innings. He struck out the side in the inning he pitched, but he also gave up a triple, a single, a double and hit a batter to give up 3 runs, which would end up being the difference between the teams.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Augusta 7, Rome 3

LF Ben Copeland - 3-5, 1 R, 1 3B (6), .278
SS Anthony Contreras - 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 CS (4), .326
3B David Maroul - 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B (7), 1 HR (4), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 2 E (8), .301
RF Michael Mooney - 1-4, 1 2B (11), 2 RBI, 1 SO, .315
DH Eugenio Velez - 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 SO, .276
1B Jose Yens - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (11), 1 RBI, .260
SP Joe Martinez - 7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR, 1 E (1), 3.58; W, 5-2
RP Adam Bauer - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 2.70

Martinez's strong pitching performance keyed a big win over first place Rome. Maroul got the team's only home run in the 4th, but a 3 run 7th (with Mooney striking a 2 out, 2 RBI double) kept the game from getting too interesting at the end.

June 7

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - No Game Scheduled

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Connecticut 5, Harrisburg 3

SS Jake Wald - 3-4, 1 R, 1 2B (8), .200
CF Clay Timpner - 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, .234
LF Aaron Sisk - 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR (6), 2 RBI, 1 SO, .213
1B Travis Ishikawa - 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .257
RF Nate Schierholtz - 0-1, 1 SO, .249
SP Chris Begg - 6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 3.87; W, 5-5
RP Oscar Montero - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO, 6.17; H, 2
RP Billy Sadler - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 2.45

The offense came just alive enough to get a win and break a 7 game losing streak. Sisk's first run homer powered a 3 run first and put Connecticut ahead early, a lead they were able to hold.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 3, Modesto 0

RF Brian Horwitz - 2-4, 1 SO, .330
SS Marcus Sanders - 0-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SF, 1 SB (21), .215
3B Simon Klink - 1-3, 1 R, .257
1B Julio Cordido - 1-3, 1 R, .264
C Todd Jennings - 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 SO, .280
SP Nick Pereira - 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 SO, 2.11; W, 7-1
RP Justin Hedrick - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 1.71; H, 7
RP Brian Anderson - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1.47; S, 17

Well, the pitching could've been better, but not by much. Pereira bounced back strong from a string of less than perfect outings to flat out dominate the 2nd place Modesto Nuts, allowing more walks (3) than hits (1). A big key to his success was the return of his sinker, getting 10 ground ball outs and only 2 fly ball outs. Hedrick impressed as well, striking out all three hitters he faced.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Game 1 - Augusta 4, Rome 0 (7 Innings); Game 2 - Augusta 4, Rome 0 (7 Innings)

Game 1
RF Michael Mooney - 1-4, 1 2B (12), 1 RBI, 3 SO, .291
1B Jose Yens - 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B (12), 1 BB, 1 SO, .263
LF Ben Copeland - 0-1, 2 R, 3 BB, 1 SB (13), .276
SS Anthony Contreras - 1-3, 1 BB, .326
SP Ryan Shaver - 6.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 SO, 2.35; W, 5-3
RP Osiris Matos - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 2.51

Game 2
LF Ben Copeland - 1-2, 1 2B (10), 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SF, 1 CS (8), .278
RF Michael Mooney - 1-2, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 PO, .316
DH David Maroul - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .292
2B Eugenio Velez - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (15), 1 SO, 3 SB (21), .325
SS Anthony Contreras - 1-4, 1 3B (2), 1 RBI, .325
CF Antoan Richardson - 1-2, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (26), .227
SP Dave McKae - 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 0.96; W, 1-1
RP David Quinowski - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB,1 SO, 1.67; H, 6
RP Wayne Foltin - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 3.00; S, 7

It's hard to have a bad day when you sweep the first place team in a double header. Copeland showed off some serious skills laying off pitches, collecting four walks on the day. McKae's start was his first of the year in 3 appearances.
