Minor League Notebook: June 10th

Some wild ones in the system tonight. Fresno can't pull it off in Colorado, while Augusta gets pounded by Kannapolis. But there's always San Jose, showing why they are still a first place team. Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Colorado Springs 7, Fresno 5

LF Fred Lewis - 3-5, 1 R, 1 3B (4), 1 RBI, .279
2B Kevin Frandsen - 2-4, 1 3B (2), 1 RBI, 1 BB, .327
RF Todd Linden - 2-5, 1 R, 1 SO, .244
CF Dan Ortmeier - 1-5, .254
C Guillermo Rodriguez - 3-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, .231
1B Chad Santos - 1-5, 1 2B (11), 1 SO, .248
SS Jose Flores - 1-4, 1 2B (2), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .300
SP Matt Kinney - 5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 SO, 4.30
RP Brandon Villafuerte - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 4.85; L, 1-3
RP Erick Threets - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 3.76
RP Jack Taschner - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 2.79

The returns of Frandsen and Linden, along with the arrivals of players like Flores and Juan Melo have kickstarted the offense of the Grizzlies, although backup catcher Rodriguez (who was hitless in his first 10 at bats this year in Fresno) helped out a lot today. But once again, the pitching failed the Grizzlies.

Notes: Fresno is 25-37, and this latest loss drops them to 12.5 games behind first place Tucson.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Akron 3, Connecticut 2

1B Travis Ishikawa - 2-3, 1 2B (8), 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 E (1), .265
3B Aaron Sisk - 1-4, 1 2B (5), 3 SO, .208
CF Clay Timpner - 0-5, 1 E (4), .240
SP Jesse Floyd - 6.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, 3.75; L, 1-7
RP Scott Munter - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1.93

Another lackluster offensive day, although Ishikawa improved on his horrible Friday, and was the only Defender to collect more than 1 hit. Munter was working better, getting 3 groundball outs against 2 flyballs.

Notes: Connecticut is 28-31, and is now alone in 3rd, 1 game behind 2nd place Trenton and 7.5 games behind first place Portland.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 13, Rancho Cucamonga 5

2B Mark Minicozzi - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR (3), 5 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .262
LF Carlos Sosa - 2-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, .322
1B Julio Cordido - 2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SO, .282
C Steve Holm - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B (5), 1 HR (6), 1 RBI, 1 PB (1), .238
RF John Bowker - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B (13), 1 RBI, 1 BB, .263
DH Brian Horwitz - 0-3, 2 R, 2 BB, .324
SP Anthony Moreno - 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO, 5.07; W, 3-3
RP Adam Gardner - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 5.28
RP Darren Sack - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 SO, 0.00
RP Ben Cox - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 SO, 3.53

San Jose broke open this wild one early and pounded the Quakes. Minicozzi had his 3 run homer in the 1st as the team scored 4 in the opening frame. But the big inning was the 4th, when the Giants scored 6 runs on 5 singles and a double, with the help of a walk.

Notes: San Jose is 38-25, and has a 5 game lead over 2nd place Modesto.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Kannapolis 11, Augusta 2

CF Ben Copeland - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B(12), .280
3B Anthony Contreras - 2-4, 1 E (8), .338
1B David Maroul - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 SO, .298
SS Eugenio Velez - 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 E (13), .276
RF Michael Mooney - 0-4, 2 SO, .303
SP Shairon Martis - 5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO, 1 WP, 5.14; L, 1-4
RP Adam Bauer - 1.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 4.42
RP Bryan Millikan - 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2 HBP, 4.45

This one was in trouble as the starter Martis gave up 5 runs in the first 5 innings, but Bauer giving up 6 runs in the next two killed this game. Although Mooney had a tough game at the plate, he nailed two runners on the basepaths, making an out at home and another at third to help this game from getting too out of hand.

Notes: Augusta is 35-27, and is alone in 2nd place, 4 games behind first place Rome.
