Minor League Notebook: June 18th

Minor League sweeps on consecutive days! Oops....today, they got swept. I don't know what's harder, losing by 10 runs, or losing by 1 in extra innings. Oh, losing TWO games by 10 runs each, yea, that's rough. Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Portland 13, Fresno 3

CF Fred Lewis - 2-3, 2 R, 2 HR (8), 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 CS (6), .282
RF Todd Linden - 2-4, 1 2B (4), 1 RBI, 1 SO, 1 E (1).239
3B Adam Shabala - 1-4, 1 R, .308
2B Kevin Frandsen - 1-4, 1 E (7), .319
LF Dan Ortmeier - 0-4, .256
SP Pedro Liriano - 3.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO, 5.06; L, 1-4
RP Brandon Villafuerte - 3.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 HBP, 5.00
RP Erick Threets - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 3.77
RP Merkin Valdez - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 4.21

Fresno's latest shelling had at least one bright spot, and that is the continued emergence of Fred Lewis. Lewis hit his 2nd and 3rd home runs in two days, giving him 8 on the season, and that helped him rise his batting average to .282 on the season as he heats up. Linden also had two hits, a single and a double, as he continues to come back from a thumb injury.

Notes: Fresno is 28-42, and is an even 15 games behind first place Tucson, sitting in last place in the Pacific South division.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Bowie 10, Connecticut 0

1B Brian Horwitz - 1-3, .261
SS Jake Wald - 1-3, .195
RF Nate Schierholtz - 0-3, .239
SP Chris Begg - 7.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 3.80; L, 5-7
RP Oscar Montero - 2.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 7.47

The Defenders suffered another shutout, this one a complete game effort by Eric DuBose, who lowered his ERA to 1.47 in his 6th Double-A appearance (and first start). DuBose held the Defenders to just 3 hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. One hit came from Horwitz, who raised his Connecticut batting average to .261 while on callup from San Jose.

Notes: Connecticut is 31-34, and is still in 3rd place, 8.5 games behind Portland. This loss broke a 3 game winning streak. Before that streak, the Defenders had lost 13 of 14 and 17 of 19.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Bakersfield 2, San Jose 1 (11 Innings)

2B Mark Minicozzi - 2-5, 1 2B (11), 1 RBI, 3 SO, .286
CF Pat Dobson - 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 SB (11), 1 CS (6), .245
SP Adam Gardner - 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, 5.40
RP Ricky Bauer - 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1 WP, 0.00
RP Nathan Pendley - 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 BK, 0.66
RP Ben Cox - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 3.38; L, 4-3

San Jose's bullpen was going to be pretty taxed from the start of this one, and got worse so when the team went into extra innings. Reliever Gardner made his first start of the year, giving up just 1 run in the first on a walk, a single and a ground out. The bullpen did a good job until the 11th, when Cox gave up a 1 out homer to Adam Fox to take the loss. The lone Giant run came when Minicozzi doubled in Dobson, who had led off the bottom of the first with a walk.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Kannapolis 7, Augusta 4

LF Ben Copeland - 2-5, 1 SO, 1 PO, .268
RF Michael Mooney - 1-3, 1 R, 1 SO, 1 PO, 1 HBP, .303
3B Eugenio Velez - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR (3), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .287
2B David Maroul - 2-5, 1 R, 1 HR (5), 2 RBI, .269
1B Pablo Sandoval - 1-2, 1 RBI, 1 SF, 1 HBP, .259
SS Anthony Contreras - 0-4, 1 SO, 1 E (10), .321
C Nick Conte - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (2), 1 SO, .150
SP Ryan Shaver - 5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 2.25; L, 6-4
RP Dave McKae - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 2 E (1), 1.69
RP Bryan Millikan - 0.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 WP, 5.28
RP Sergio Romo - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 3.21
RP Osiris Matos - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 2.55

This game fell apart in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings, when 3 different pitchers allowed 3 2 run innings in a row. Shaver's problems including an error by Contreras that helped one score run. McKae commited an error of his own on a pickoff throw, but it didn't affect the scoring officially.
