Minor League Notebook: July 5th

Connecticut goes for two, would their offense continue its re-emergence? Or has it all gone to Augusta. And would S-K be able to stop its sudden season-longest losing streak of (gasp) two games? Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Sacramento 10, Fresno 8

2B Kevin Frandsen - 3-5, 3 R, 1 SB (5), .324
RF Todd Linden - 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B (12), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .268
3B Michael Cervenak - 2-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 SO, .378
1B Chad Santos - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B (14), 2 RBI, 2 SO, .261
C Justin Knoedler - 3-4, .248
CF Fred Lewis - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 SO, 1 E(4), .260
SP Brian Cooper - 3.1 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 2 SO, 5.73; L, 3-5
RP Jeff Petersen - 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO, 1 HR, 8.45
RP Matt Anderson - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 8.22
RP Erick Threets - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3.26
RP Carlos Hines - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 4.88

Fresno was able to get some offense going on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to keep up with their pitching staffs' problems. Sacramento did it in the 4th, with a double, single, and a walk to load the bases with no one out. After getting an out, Cooper walked 3 straight batters for 3 runs. He got lifted for Petersen, who gave up a single for 2 runs, then a 3 run homer.

Notes: Fresno is 34-51, and still 18.5 games behind first place Tucson. Frandsen's game was his first since his latest trip back to the minors.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Game 1 - Portland 2, Connecticut 1 (7 Innings); Game 2 - Connecticut 6, Portland 1 (7 Innings)

Game 1
CF Clay Timpner - 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B (11), 1 HR (3), 1 RBI, .217
3B Brian Buscher - 2-3, 1 2B (11), 1 BB, .267
DH Nate Schierholtz - 0-2, 1 BB, 1 HBP, .237
1B Travis Ishikawa - 0-3, 1 BB, 1 SO, .241
SP Garrett Broshuis - 7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR, 4.98; L, 3-7

Game 2
CF Clay Timpner - 2-3, 2 R, 1 HBP, .222
3B Brian Buscher - 2-4, 2 RBI, .270
RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-3, 2 RBI, 2 SO, .238
LF Brian Horwitz - 1-2, .209
1B Travis Ishikawa - 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .238
SP Geno Espineli - 5.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 WP, 2.64; W, 5-2
RP R.D. Spiehs - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 3.82; S, 1

The Defenders were able to split a doubleheader with the team that took over first place from Connecticut nearly two months ago. In Game 1, Broshuis was able to come back with a strong start, but the 8 Defender hits were evenly divided between just 4 hitters, resulting in the team's only run coming from Timpner's home run. Timpner stayed hot in Game 2, but got a lot of help scoring runs. Meanwhile, Espineli made his 3rd start of the season and was impressive again, lowering his ERA 15 points to 2.64.

Notes: Connecticut is 38-46, and was able to move ahead of New Hampshire to take over 4th place by itself, a half game ahead of New Hampshire and a game behind Binghamton for 3rd.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Rancho Cucamonga 4, San Jose 1

CF Alex Requena - 2-3, 1 2B (1), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 SB (3), .292
LF Michael Wagner - 2-4, .272
C Steve Holm - 1-4, 1 R, .252
SP Anthony Moreno - 3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR, 1 HBP, 4.37; L, 6-4
RP Ben Cox - 3.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 3 WP, 3.42
RP Adam Gardner - 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 5.91

San Jose's night got a bit tougher, when starter Moreno was ejected in the 4th inning. Moreno gave up a one out home run, which broke a scoreless tie. He came back and hit the next batter (whether it was intentional is unknown) and was ejected. Cox came in to replace him, and threw 2 wild pitches but got out of the inning. San Jose was unable to break through until the 7th, when they got two singles and a walk to load the bases. But a Dobson groundout got an out without a run scoring, and Requena singled in the only run the Giants would get.

Notes: San Jose is 9-3, and their lead over Visalia is still 1 full game.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Augusta 16, Hickory 2

LF Ben Copeland - 3-5, 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 CS (13), .298
3B David Maroul - 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR (8), 2 RBI, 1 SO, 1 HBP, .266
C Barry Gunther - 2-6, 2 R, 1 HR (3), 3 RBI, .253
SS Anthony Contreras - 2-6, 1 R, 3 RBI, .326
DH Michael Mooney - 1-6, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .286
1B Pablo Sandoval - 2-6, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 E (15), .258
SP Dave McKae - 8.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO, 1 HR, 1.50; W, 3-1
RP Buck Cody - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 6.86

Augusta exploded for more offense against Hickory on Wednesday. A 7 run 7th inning was the centerpiece of the scoring, helped by the inability of Hickory to get outs on two ground balls, one of which led to an error, and a bases loaded hit-batter. Copeland's hot streak continued, and is he two points away from hitting .300 for the first time this year. McKae won his 3rd decision in 8 appearances, 5 starts.

Notes: Augusta remains in first place, a game ahead of Greenville and a game and a half ahead of Asheville.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A) - Salem-Keizer 5, Eugene 2

1B Brett Pill - 2-3, 1 2B (1), 1 BB, .500
SS Emmanuel Burriss - 2-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (7), .237
RF Robert Felmy - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B(3), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .351
DH William Thompson - 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB, .385
C Adam Witter - 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, .286
SP Gib Hobson - 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 4.00
RP Paul Lussier - 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 1.46; W, 1-0
RP Juan Trinidad - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 0.00; S, 5

S-K got back to their winning ways and managed even up 2-2 in what is an extended 6 game series with Eugene, 3 on the road and this game being the first of 3 at home. Hobson gave a run in the first but held the Ems to that for 5 innings, but didn't get the decision as the game stayed tied at 1 from the first until the 6th, when a 1 out error and a walk put runners on first and second for Rohlinger, who hit into a ground out at 2nd, but scored Felmy from 2nd. Rohlinger moved up on an error on that play, then scored on Witter's single.

Notes: Salem-Keizer is 13-4, and remains 2 games ahead of Vancouver.

AZL Giants (Rookie) - Angels 12, Giants 6

SS Tomas De La Rosa - 2-5, 1 RBI, .375
LF-RF James Simmons - 2-3, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, .289
C Robert Davis - 2-2, 1 R, 2 2B (2), .385
LF Jeremiah Luster - 1-1, 1 2B (2), .600
3B Matt Downs - 1-3, 1 RBI, .333
SP Wilmin Rodriguez - 2.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 6.30; L, 1-1
RP Adam Ortiz-Jusino - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 SO, 4.50
RP Anthony Pannone- 0.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 1 HR, 2 HBP, 40.50
RP Henry Sosa - 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 4.35

The rookie Giants had some problems against the Angels, letting the game get out of hand in the 6th. Pannone only got the one out while giving up 4 hits and 2 hit-by-pitches. All 6 runners would score, most on the last batter he faced, Seth Loman, who hit a grand slam. Rehabbing De La Rosa continues to hit well, and should soon be out of the rookie league.

Notes: The AZL Giants fell into a 3 way tie for first place at 8-4, with the Mariners and Royals.
