Minor League Notebook: July 12th

Triple-A and Double-A had their All-Star games, but Giant participation was limited (and non-existant in the Triple-A game). Meanwhile, the balls fly out in San Jose, and Salem-Keizer turns a late comeback into extra innings. Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - INT All-Stars 6, PCL All-Stars 0

No Fresno players played, as the only representative from the Grizzlies, Adam Shabala, was injured.

Notes: Fresno returns to action tomorrow, the 13th, traveling to Colorado Springs for a 4 game series.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - South All-Stars 5, North All-Stars 3

1B Tyler Von Schell - 0-1, .000
3B Brian Buscher, 1-2, .500
RP Pat Misch - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO, 0.00
RP Billy Sadler - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 27.00

The Southern Division All-Star were able to barely outscore the North. Sadler allowed a run, but the runner was one he left on base for Ivan Maldonado, who faced three batters and gave up 2 singles, allowing Sadler's walk to score.

Notes: Connecticut is back to action tonight, the 13th, facing first place Portland for 5 games in 4 days, including a doubleheader Friday.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Bakersfield 5, San Jose 3

LF Carlos Sosa - 3-4, 2 R, 2 2B (14), 1 RBI, .324
2B Mark Minicozzi - 2-4, 1 R, .289
RF John Bowker - 1-3, 1 BB, .252
1B William Thompson - 0-4, 1 BB, .071
SP Gregorio Martinez - 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR, 4.03
RP Alfredo Simon - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP, 9.00; BS, 1; L, 0-2
RP Tom King - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 2.84

Bakersfield won Wednesday night's game thanks to the long ball. Bakersfield got a 2 run homer in the first off of starter Martinez, and then added a 2 run shot in the 7th, off of reliever Simon. Though that gave Bakersfield a lead they wouldn't lose, the last pitcher in the game for San Jose matched the others, as King gave up a solo shot in the 9th.

Notes: San Jose is 13-7, and lost a game in the standings. They are now just 1.5 games ahead of Visalia.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Kannapolis 4, Augusta 1

LF Ben Copeland - 1-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 SF, .299
SS Anthony Contreras - 1-4, 1 SO, .316
CF Antoan Richardson - 2-3, 1 SO, 1 SB (41), .278
RF Michael Mooney - 0-4, 2 SO, .295
SP Joe Martinez - 6.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 3.81; L, 8-5
RP Bryan Milikan - 0.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 5.40
RP Taylor Wilding - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 2.08

Augusta's offense couldn't keep up with Kannapolis today. Martinez's control was good, as he handed out no free passes, but he gave up 6 hits and only struck out 3 batters, and 3 runs came across under his watch.

Notes: Augusta is still solidly in first, at 16-4 and 4 games ahead of Greenville.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A) - Tri-City 5, Salem-Keizer 4 (11 Innings)

1B Brett Pill - 2-5, 1 R, 1 HR (1), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .300
C Henry Gutierrez-Portalatin - 2-5, 2 SO, .393
2B Bradley Boyer - 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B (1), 1 RBI, .140
SS Emmanuel Burriss - 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 CS (2), .200
3B Ryan Rohlinger - 1-3, 1 BB, .286
SP John Odom - 5.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 2.96
RP Jesse English - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 2 HR, 5.68
RP Adam Paul - 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 4.38
RP Steven Calicutt - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 3.38; L, 0-1

S-K had a late comeback fall to naught in the extra innings. The Volcanoes got an 8th inning run from Brett Pill on his first pro home run, and then got one more as Rohlinger singled, then was lifted for pinch runner Tyler Graham. Graham got to second on an out, and then stole third. The play cause a throwing error, and Graham came home. But in the 11th, with Calicutt pitching his second inning of relief, he allowed 2 one out walks, and then a 2 out single to let the winning run in.

Notes: Salem-Keizer is 15-8, and is back into a first place tie with Vancouver.

AZL Giants (Rookie) - Giants 3, Athletics 0

3B Matt Downs - 1-3, 1 HBP, .373
LF-CF James Simmons - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (3), 1 BB, 1 SO, .280
RF Joe Roundy - 1-3, 1 R, 1 3B (2), 1 BB, .260
SP Henry Sosa - 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 SO, 2.93; W, 2-0
RP Frolian Ramierez - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 5.40
RP Wilmin Rodriguez - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 5.25; H, 1
RP David Newton - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 3.00; S, 3

The Giants engaged in a rare pitcher's duel. Through 8 innings, the only run came after a walk and a hit by pitch, and scoring on a sacrifice fly. The Giants did pick up 2 more in the 9th, with a walk and a Simmons double leading the way, and a single and sacrifice fly knocking the runs in.

Notes: The AZL Giants are 12-4, and remain in first by just a half game over the 2nd place Padres.
