Minor League Notebook: July 26th

The most anticipated debut of the year finally happens! First round pick Tim Lincecum pitches one inning in Salem-Keizer. I know the kid is hyped, but you don't really believe he's going to strike out the side swinging, do you? Do you? It's NOT Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Round Rock 5, Fresno 2

1B Lance Niekro - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, .373
CF Clay Timpner - 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 SO, .269
RF Jason Ellison - 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SF, .417
LF Fred Lewis - 1-4, 2 SO, .263
3B Kevin Frandsen - 0-3, 1 E (10), .297
SP Brian Cooper - 6.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO, 5.22; L, 4-8
RP Merkin Valdez - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 E (2), 1 BK, 6.27
RP Dusty Bergman - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1.93

Fresno outhit Round Rock 5 to 4, but 3 errors and 5 walks undid an otherwise decent outing. Cooper walked two batters to lead off the 5th, then let one come in on a double, and walked another to load the bases. A single and a throwing error two batters later scored two more runners, and a groundout let a 4th score.

Notes: Fresno is 42-63, and is back to 25.5 games behind first place Tucson. They are still in last place by 7.5 games.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Bowie 1, Connecticut 0

DH Brian Horwitz - 3-3, 1 BB, .284
LF Dan Ortmeier - 1-4, 1 SO, .311
SS Jake Wald - 1-3, 2 SO, .203
RF Nate Schierholtz - 0-4, .234
1B Travis Ishikawa - 0-3, 1 BB, 2 SO, .226
SP Geno Espineli - 7.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1 E (1), 3.93; L, 5-5
RP Joe Bateman - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 4.13

Espineli shook off a bad start on the 21st, where he allowed 6 earned runs in 5 innings, and put up a very good start, but an error by Espineli on a sacrifice bunt attempt led to an unearned run scoring, and it would be the only run in the game. Meanwhile Bowie starter Radhimes Liz struck out 8 batters holding the Defender offense to another goose egg, with only Horwitz putting up a good showing.

Notes: Connecticut is 46-59, and is in a virtual tie for 4th place with New Britain (44-57) at 12 games back of first place Portland.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 2, Stockton 1

LF John Bowker - 2-4, 1 2B 2 RBI, 1 SO, .276
1B Chad Santos - 1-4, 1 3B (1), 2 SO, .333
SS Julio Cordido - 1-4, .297
C Tyler La Torre - 1-2, 1 R, 1 BB, .500
CF Alex Requena - 1-4, 1 R, 1 SO, 1 SB (9), .300
SP Anthony Moreno - 5.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP, 4.47; W, 8-5
RP Justin Hedrick - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1.44; H, 13
RP Nathan Pendley - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 2.55; H, 9
RP Brian Anderson - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 1.27; S, 29

San Jose's pitching staff held together for this close one, while a bullpen that has had some recent troubles had a great game. Hedrick picked up his 13th hold and Pendley picked up his 9th, while Anderson took his league leading 29th save. Meanwhile, Bowker was the only Giant with multiple hits, and both brought in runs, one in the third and one in the 5th.

Notes: San Jose is 20-13, and has pulled back ahead of Visalia for first place by just half a game.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Augusta 5, Lakewood 3

3B David Maroul - 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B (17), 2 RBI, 1 SO, .280
RF Michael Mooney - 2-3, 1 BB, 2 CS (4), 1 PO, .290
2B Eugenio Velez - 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SO, 2 SB (39), .309
CF Antoan Richardson - 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (47), .294
LF Ben Copeland - 0-4, .285
SP Ronnie Ray - 6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 WP, 3.82; W, 6-5
RP Bryan Millikan - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 5.11; H, 3
RP David Quinowski - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1.12; H, 10
RP Wayne Foltin - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.37; S, 15

Ray continues to improve in the Augusta rotation. His 3 runs allowed wasn't spectacular, but were enough to hold on for a GreenJacket victory, with the help of 3 perfect innings of relief from the bullpen.

Notes: Augusta is 26-7, and remains in first place by 4 games over Greenville. The GreenJackets have won 2 of 3 against the Northern Division first place Lakewood with one more meeting to come on Thursday.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A) - Vancouver 4, Salem-Keizer 3

SS Emmanuel Burriss - 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB (20), 1 E (8), .281
RF Bobby Felmy - 2-4, 1 SO, .284
LF Matt Weston - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (1), .195
DH Adam Witter - 0-32, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 SO, .284
3B Ryan Rohlinger - 0-3, 1 RBI, .279
1B Brett Pill - 0-4, 1 RBI, .227
SP Tim Lincecum - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 1 WP, 0.00
RP Gib Hobson - 4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 3.86; L, 1-3
RP Eric Stolp - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 2 WP, 0.81
RP Paul Lussier - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 3.26

Tim Lincecum's long awaited debut finally came, but but it was spoiled by Vancouver's late offensive surge. Lincecum struck out the first three batters he faced, all swinging, but one got on thanks to a wild pitch on the third strike. The 4th and final batter he faced popped out to end the inning. Vancouver took the lead with 2 runs in the 5th and scored 1 more in each the 6th and 7th to get all the runs they needed.

Notes: Salem-Keizer is 24-13, and holds a 1 game lead over Vancouver for first place. They will play one more game in the series Thursday, and then will not meet again until a 6 game home-and-home series at the end of August.

AZL Giants (Rookie) - No Game Scheduled

Notes: The Arizona Rookie League is beginning its 2nd half. The Giants finished at 17-11, tied for first with the Royals. The Giants won the first half series 2 games to 1, but it's unknown if that is the tiebreaker to decide the first half championship.
