Minor League Notebook: July 27th

Things are getting tough for Connecticut's slumping offense. It's so tough that one slugger tried a different way to win: running. And hey, it worked! Meanwhile, the lower level teams all continue to roll and stay in first place. Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Round Rock 6, Fresno 1

CF Jason Ellison - 2-4, 1 R, 1 SO, .423
1B Lance Niekro - 1-4, 1 RBI, .364
LF Fred Lewis - 1-3, 1 BB, .264
2B Kevin Frandsen - 0-3, 1 HBP, .293
SP Matt Kinney - 6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO, 2 HR, 4.96; L, 5-6
RP Dusty Bergman - 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 WP, 1.80

Fresno had another bad pitching day, as Matt Kinney gave up 3 runs, and the bullpen combined for 3 more runs in the 8th to put any hopes of a 9th inning comeback out of mind. Niekro's 3 game home run hitting streak ended, but he still got a single in the 6th to plate the only Grizzly run.

Notes: Fresno is 42-64, and still deep in last place.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Connecticut 2, Altoona 1

RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-3, 2 R, 1 2B (17), 1 BB, 2 SB (7), .235
2B Derin McMains - 2-4, 1 2B (10), 1 CS (6), .226
C Todd Jennings - 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, .268
LF Brian Horwitz - 0-3, 1 HBP, .278
SP Jesse Floyd - 5.1 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 2 WP, 3.78
RP Oscar Montero - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 4.72
RP Billy Sadler - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 3.19; W, 4-3

With the offense stalling again and the power missing as usual, a slugger turned to a new tool to help guide a win. Nate Schierholtz stole 2 bases (giving him only 7 on the year), leading to 2 runs, the only runs the Defenders would score. Schierholtz got on base all 4 times he was up, including two on plays with errors.

Notes: Connecticut is 47-59, and broke a tie for 4th place in the Northern Division. They are a half game ahead of now-5th place New Hampshire, and are 8.5 games behind 3rd place Binghamton.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 6, Stockton 1

LF John Bowker - 2-5, 1 2B (24), 1 RBI, .277
CF Alex Requena - 3-5, 1 R, 1 SB (10), .316
3B Julio Cordido - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B (17), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .298
DH Jon Armitage - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B (1), 1 SO, .125
SP Kelyn Acosta - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 4.50
RP Alexander Hinshaw - 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 2 SO, 4.47
RP Darren Sack - 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP, 0.76; W, 5-0
RP Anthony Pannone - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 4.50

Kelyn Acosta was unscored upon for the first time in 3 appearances since his return from injury (1 in the AZL, where 4 unearned runs were scored), but it was Sack's impressive pitching in the middle of the game that fueled this win. Stockton had as many errors as hits (4), but only 1 Giant run came in unearned.

Notes: San Jose is 21-13, and is maintaining a slim one game lead over Visalia for first place in the North Division.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Augusta 5, Lakewood 3

3B David Maroul - 2-4, 1 2B (18), 1 3B (2), 2 RBI, 1 E (11), .283
1B Julian Benavidez - 3-4, 1 2B (5), 1 RBI, 2 E (2), .344
LF Ben Copeland - 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .284
RF Michael Mooney - 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (27), .288
2B Eugenio Velez - 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (40), .306
CF Antoan Richardson - 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 CS (6), 1 PO, .291
SP Dave McKae - 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 1.52; W, 5-1
RP Kelvin Pichardo - 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 0.00; H, 1
RP Taylor Wilding - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 3.27; H, 2
RP Wayne Foltin - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.31; S, 16

Errors hurt the GreenJackets, but not enough to take another loss. All three Lakewood runs were unearned, 2 coming in subsequent to Benavidez's first error of the game in the 2nd inning, and another coming in on a play where Benevidez mishandled a second ball in the 4th. But the bullpen didn't allow any hits and just 1 walk as the GreenJackets cruised to another win.

Notes: Augusta is 27-7, and are in first place 5 games ahead of 2nd place Greenville.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A) - Salem-Keizer 5, Vancouver 2

LF Matthew Weston - 1-3, 1 2B (2), 2 RBI, .200
RF Bobby Felmy - 1-4, 1 SO, .283
3B Ryan Rohlinger - 1-4, 1 R, 1 SO, 2 E (9), .278
SS Emmanuel Burriss - 0-3, 1 BB, 1 CS (6)
C Robert Davis - 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B (1), 1 SO, .273
DH Adam Witter - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (7), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .286
SP John Odom - 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1.98
RP Clayton Tanner - 2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0.00; W, 1-0
RP Juan Trinidad - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1.38; S, 9

A big late inning keyed the Volcanoes win, as they scored all their runs in the 7th inning. The Volcanoes hit 3 doubles in the inning, including a RBI double by Weston, and Tyler Graham got on with an error and stole second and third to help coming around to score. 3rd round pick Tanner picked up his first win of the year despite allowing his first run of the year, an unearned run.

Notes: Salem-Keizer is 25-13, and extended their lead over second place Vancouver to 2 games.

AZL Giants (Rookie) - Giants 3, Cubs 2

1B Sean Van Elderen - 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB (3), .220
CF Tayler Creswell - 2-4, 1 R, 2 SO, .243
C Elio Sarmiento - 1-1, .333
SS Sharlon Schoop - 1-4, 1 R, .410
SP Wilmin Rodriguez - 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 WP, 1 HBP, 5.25; W, 3-2
RP Adalberto Paulino - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 8.00; H, 1
RP Adam Ortiz-Jusino - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 4.35; H, 1
RP David Newton - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1.74; S, 5

The rookies scored early, and got good enough pitching to hold onto this game. The Giants scored 3 runs in the first with RBI singles by Greg McCarthy and Van Elderen. From there, it was sharp pitching. Rodriguez through 5 sharp innings, and Ortiz-Jusino and Newton held onto a terse one run lead to open the 2nd half with a win.

Notes: The AZL Giants are 1-0 in the 2nd half of the AZL season, and are tied with the Mariners, Padres and Royals.
