Minor League Notebook: August 4th

Alfredo Simon struggles had him placed on the waiver wire to take him off the 40 Man Roster, and potentially lose him to another team for nothing. Well, Simon survived and pitched a good game in San Jose. Just Another Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Nashville 5, Fresno 4

RF Jason Ellison - 1-5, 1 SO, .393
2B Kevin Frandsen - 1-4, .296
CF Clay Timpner - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 SO, .270
SS Tomas De La Rosa - 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, .265
SP Pat Misch - 6.0 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 4.66
RP Merkin Valdez - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 6.18; H, 2
RP Michael Tejera - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 1 HR, 3.45; BS, 1
RP Carlos Hines - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 4.91

Fresno was peppered to death by the Sounds. Nashville scored only 1 run at a time, but did it 5 different times to take the win. Fresno briefly had the lead in the 6th after Timpner hit his 1st home run at Triple-A, a 2 run shot that made it 4-3, but runs in the 7th and 8th did in Fresno.

Notes: Fresno is 45-69, and still in last place. They dropped to 28 games behind first place Tucson, but are just 7 games behind 3rd place Las Vegas.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Binghamton 6, Connecticut 4

RF Nate Schierholtz - 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B (18), 1 HR (9), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .239
1B Travis Ishikawa - 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .230
3B Derin McMains - 2-3, 1 R, 1 HBP, .235
LF Brian Horwitz - 1-5, 1 SO, .298
SP Jesse Floyd - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO, 4.11; L, 2-12
RP Joe Bateman - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 SO, 3.83
RP Oscar Montero - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 4.46

Schierholtz's 3rd inning solo home run was the lone bright spot in this game, briefly putting Connecticut on top 2-1 (the lead would be lost the next half inning). Schierholtz, one of the several slumping Connecticut hitters, now has 3 home runs in 4 games, giving him 9 on the season and typing Aaron Sisk and Ishikawa for the team lead.

Notes: Connecticut is 50-62, and remains in 4th place. They hold a one game lead over 5th place New Hampshire.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - San Jose 8, Bakersfield 1

LF Pat Dobson - 2-3, 3 R, 1 2B (16), 1 3B (1), 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SB (15), .252
RF John Bowker - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR (6), 3 RBI, 1 SO, .278
1B Chad Santos - 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B (3), 1 HR (1), 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 E (1), .238
C Steve Holm - 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR (13), 1 RBI, 1 BB, .249
SP Alfredo Simon - 4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 BK, 6.63
RP Alexander Hinshaw - 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 4.31; W, 5-2
RP Justin Hedrick - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.05
RP Thomas King - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.93

Alfredo Simon, fresh off of clearing waivers and remaining with the Giants organization, had his best outing since going to San Jose. The only run he gave up was unearned, letting the runner on with the only hit he gave up, and then he scored thanks to an error by Santos. Otherwise, Simon was dominant. The bullpen kicked in 5 innings where they allowed only 1 hit, meaning the Blaze had just 2 hits and a walk all game. Bowker hit an opposite field home run in the first, and Santos and Holm both had blasts to center later in the game.

Notes: San Jose is 25-17, and remain just 1 game behind first place Visalia, who is 25-15.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Augusta 1, Hagerstown 0

LF Ben Copeland - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 CS (16), .280
2B Eugenio Velez - 2-4, 1 SB (44), .303
CF Antoan Richardson - 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B (53), .297
RF Michael Mooney - 0-4, .288
SP Sergio Romo - 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 SO, 2.67; W, 9-2
RP Kelvin Pichardo - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1.93; H, 3
RP Osiris Matos - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1.95; S, 11

Augusta pulled out a pitcher's duel of a game. In the 5th, Richardson singled to lead off the inning, and then stole second. Richardson moved to third on a groundout, and Copeland singled to score him. That would be enough, as Romo limited the Suns to 6 baserunners and the relievers didn't allow anyone on base for the final two innings.

Notes: Augusta is 32-9, and extended their hold on first place in the Southern division to 9 games over Greenville. The GreenJackets magic number to win the 2nd half title is now 22.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A) - Salem-Keizer 3, Yakima 2

SS Emmanuel Burriss - 3-5, 1 R, 1 SO, 1 SB (25), 1 E (11), .279
RF Bobby Felmy - 1-5, 1 R, 1 SO, .258
3B Ryan Rohlinger - 1-2, 1 R, 1 HR (1), 3 RBI, 1 SF, 1 HBP, .288
1B Brett Pill - 1-4, 1 SO, .216
CF Michael McBryde - 0-4, 3 SO, 1 E (4), .269
SP Kevin Pucetas - 4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 3.35
RP Steven Calicutt - 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 2.28; W, 2-1
RP Adam Paul - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3.60; H, 4
RP Juan Trinidad - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 1.20; S, 11

Burriss' small ball helped the Volcanoes win this one. Burriss started the Volcanoes half of the first by beating out an infield single, and then stealing second. Two productive outs then got him to first, and Rohlinger's sacrifice fly scored him for a 1-0 lead. The Volcanoes lost the lead, but got it back in the 5th on a 2 run Rohlinger home run.

Notes: Salem-Keizer is 30-15, and remain in first place in the West. They have a 5 game lead over 2nd place Vancouver.

AZL Giants (Rookie) - Angels 7, Giants 2

CF Tayler Creswell - 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B (4), 1 SO, .227
RF-CF James Simmons -1-4, 1 R, 1 2B (4), 2 SO, .244
LF Emmanuel Cividanes - 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .323
SS Sharlon Schoop - 0-4, 1 SO, 1 CS (2), 1 E (6), .337
SP Wilmin Rodriguez - 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 5.40; L, 3-3
RP Lenny Martinez - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 3.60
RP Adam Ortiz-Jusino - 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2.65
RP Kevin Foeman - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO, 13.50

The rookies suffered some problems, and 3 errors led to 4 unearned runs for the Angels. The top performance was Ortiz-Jusino, who came in in the third with the bases loaded and 1 out. Ortiz-Jusino didn't let any runners score, getting a groundout to get the runner at home and another groundout to end it.

Notes: The AZL Giants are 5-3, and is in 4th place in the Arizona League. They are 1 game back of the Padres and Royals, who are tied for first, and a half game behind the second place Angels.
