Minor League Notebook: August 15th

15 runs in the PCL. 11 In the South Atlantic League. 22 in the California League. And then, just 3 in a pitcher's duel in the Eastern League. Yea, it was Just Another High-Scoring Day in the Minors.

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA) - Fresno 12, Salt Lake 3

DH Jason Ellison - 2-6, 2 R, 1 2B (10), 1 RBI, .410
LF Fred Lewis - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B (19), 1 3B (10), 2 RBI, 2 BB, .272
1B Mike Cervenak - 3-5, 2 R, 2 2B (13), 1 3B (1), 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .295
3B Juan Melo - 3-5, 1 RBI, .263
CF Clay Timpner - 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR (2), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .269
2B Jed Hansen - 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B (14), 2 RBI, .240
SP Nick Pereira - 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP, 4.55; W, 4-2
RP Brian Cooper - 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 WP, 4.85
RP Carlos Hines - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 4.88

Pereira suffered through a few problem areas, but his team gave him more than enough room to earn his 4th win. Pereira had given up just 2 hits, one a solo home run, through 3 innings, but then gave up a walk and double with one out in the 4th, and a wild pitch scored a second run. Pereira walked two more guys to load the bases, then got a strike out and pop out to hold the damage to just 1 run. Meanwhile, Timpner hit his second home run at Triple-A, and Cervenak led the team with 3 RBI on 2 doubles and a triple.

Notes: Fresno is still mired in last place at 51-73.

Connecticut Defenders (AA) - Connecticut 2, Altoona 1

RF Nate Schierholtz - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR (10), 1 RBI, .264
1B Tyler Von Schell - 2-3, 1 2B (20), 1 E (3), .243
CF Randy Walter - 1-4, 1 R, .207
LF Brian Horwitz - 0-3, 1 SO, .275
SP Jesse Floyd - 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 SO, 4.26; W, 3-12
RP Jeff Petersen - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 5.06; H, 3
RP Billy Sadler - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2.56; S, 20

After getting swept away by the Curve in a double header, Connecticut struck back for a win on Tuesday. They were led by Schierholtz, who hit his 10th home run of the year in the third inning to extend the Defender lead to 2-0. Schierholtz also go on by an error in the 1st after Walter's single, allowing Walter to come in to score unearned later in the inning.

Notes: Connecticut is 58-65, and remain 5.5 games back of a playoff spot. Portland is now alone in second, with Binghamton at third a game behind them. In the month of August, Schierholtz is batting .415/.449/.738 with 3 doubles, 3 triples and 4 home runs.

San Jose Giants (High-A) - Bakersfield 17, San Jose 5

DH William Thompson - 3-4, 1 2B (3), .239
2B Mark Minicozzi - 1-5, 2 R, 1 HR (4), 1 RBI, .289
CF Alex Requena - 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 SB (15), .320
LF Pat Dobson - 1-5, 1 R, 2 SO, .254
SP Alfredo Simon - 2.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO, 2 HR, 7.86; L, 0-4
RP Anthony Panone - 2.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 2 HR, 5.17
RP Alexander Hinshaw - 2.2 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 6 SO, 1 WP, 4.15

There's not much to say about this one except that San Jose's pitching got hammered. The 8th inning became a nightmare, as Hinshaw gave up 6 unearned runs thanks to two errors by Tim Hutting, a fielding error and then a throwing error, on one play.

Notes: San Jose is 29-22, and fell back to 1.5 games behind first place Visalia.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) - Augusta 11, Savannah 0 (7 innings; Rain)

CF Antoan Richardson - 3-4, 2 R, 1 2B (17), 1 RBI, 1 SO, 1 SB (60), .304
LF Ben Copeland - 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B (25), 2 RBI, 1 BB, .280
2B Eugenio Velez - 2-4, 3 R, 1 3B (16), 1 HR (12), 3 RBI, 1 E (18), .307
RF Michael Mooney - 1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, .279
DH Julian Benavidez - 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR (5), 3 RBI, 1 BB, .264
SP Joe Martinez - 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 SO, 3.33; W, 13-5

It may have been just 7 innings, but it'll count as a complete game shutout for him as rain ended this one early (and perhaps mercifully) for Savannah. Richardson led the team with a 3 for 4 day and his 60th steal of the season, and the top three hitters went 7 for 11 with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, a triple, a home run and 6 RBI.

Notes: Augusta is 38-13, and holds a 9.5 game on Charleston for the divison. Their Magic Number is 11.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A) - Salem-Keizer 10, Spokane 9

SS Emmanuel Burriss - 2-4, 2 R, 1 3B (1), 1 BB, 3 SB (32), .293
LF Matt Weston - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (10), 1 BB, .309
1B Brett Pill - 0-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SO, .235
3B Ryan Rohlinger - 0-3, 1 R, 2 BB, .277
C Adam Witter - 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, .293
CF Michael McBryde - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B (8), 1 RBI, 2 SO, .263
2B Bradley Boyer - 1-3, 2 R, 1 HR (4), 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SO, .226
DH Thomas Neal - 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .293
SP Ben Snyder - 3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP, 3.38
RP Jesse English - 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 SO, 8.68
RP Adam Pual - 1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 WP, 4.15
RP Paul Lussier - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 WP, 3.81; BS, 3; W, 4-1

Salem-Keizer prevailed in a wild one, where the teams combined for 25 hits. Tied at 9 in the 9th, the Volcanoes pulled it out with a walk and a single by pinch hitter Christopher Todd to put runners on first and second. Then it was time for some small ball, as McBryde laide down a sacrifice bunt, and after an intentional walk to load the bases, Tyler Graham hit a sacrifice fly to win the game.

Notes: Salem-Keizer is 39-17, and is solidly in first place in the Northwest League West division. Their Magic Number to clinch the title is 13.
