HWB Giants Report 10/7-10/8

The Hawaiian League rolls on, with Giants prospects playing but the Waikiki BeachBoys suffering from some miscues over the weekend.

Oct. 7th: North Shore 5, Waikiki 4

Giants Prospects:
DH Nate Schierholtz - 1-3, 1 R, 1 SO, 1 HBP, .091
2B Mark Minicozzi - 0-4, 1 BB, 3 SO, .222
RP David Quinowski - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 WP, 2.25
RP Brian Anderson - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 6.00

It was a fairly forgettable Saturday for Giants prospects in Hawaii. Schierholtz's hitting struggles weren't as bad, getting on base in the 4th after being hit by a pitch. He played a big part in a 9th inning rally, singling after a 1 out double and later scoring to key a 4 run rally that fell just short.

Minicozzi had more problems, garnering a sombrero (3 strikeouts), only getting a walk with two out in the 3rd.

For the pitchers, it was not great, either. Quinowski came in down 3-0 in the 7th, and looked strong with two strikeouts in the inning. But in the 8th, he gave up a single and a walk with nobody out. He got two outs, but then threw a wild pitch and gave up a single that allowed a run to come in.

Anderson, in the 9th, didn't get nickel and dimed so much. He gave up a leadoff home run to Koby Clemens, a run that turned out to be key in the game. Anderson struck out two of the next three hitters, but did give up a single between the K's.

Oct. 8th: North Shore 7, Waikiki 1

Giants Prospects:
RF Nate Schierholtz - 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, .267
RP Alexander Hinshaw - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 3.38; L, 0-1

Waikiki's long weekend continued, but at least things began looking brighter for Schierholtz. Schierholtz went 3 for 4 with a double and a walk. He accounted for nearly half of Waikiki's 7 hits, only making an out in his first at bat. His one out double in the 4th didn't result in any scores. However, his one out single in the 6th scored teammate Ian Desmond and moved another to third, appearing to set up a big rally. But no one hit behind him, and the one run was Waikiki's only of the night.

Meanwhile, Alexander Hinshaw took the loss, but was victimized by some tough plays. He came in in the 5th, and got out of the inning with 2 strikeouts, but an error by 3B Duke Sardinha allowed one runner to get on, foreshadowing what was to come. In the 6th, Sardinha gave up another error with one out. The next batter grounded a double play ball, but SS Desmond threw the ball away on the turn. Hinshaw then gave up back to back doubles and a single, giving up 3 unearned runs. Hinshaw was taken out and the third out was gotten without any more damage, but the runs put the BeachBoys in a 3-0 hole.
