Fall League Update: 10/26-10/31

The fall leagues continue. Can Frandsen and Sadler keep it up? And just who is that Giant prospect hitting so well in Hawaii?

HWB - Waikiki Beach Boys

Oct. 26th: No Game Scheduled

Oct. 27th: Waikiki 11, North Shore 4

Giants Prospects:
3B Mark Minicozzi - 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR (3), 5 RBI, 1 SO, .302
RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B (1), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 SB (3), .246

Minicozzi continued to be among the leaders in the HWB, with his third home run of the fall lending 3 runs to a 5 RBI day. Meanwhile, Schierholtz added an RBI triple of his own in the 8th inning, scoring Minicozzi.

Oct. 28th: North Shore 6, Waikiki 5

Giants Prospects:
3B Mark Minicozzi - 2-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 SO, .310
RP Alex Hinshaw - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2.92
RP David Quinowski - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 2.70; L, 2-1

The Beach Boys came close to another win, but some late troubles hurt their chances. Minicozzi had his second straight 2 for 5 day, including a 2 RBI single in the 3rd.

Hinshaw continued his strong fall performance with two quiet innings in the 4th and 5th. But Quinowski ran into some troubles. Quinowski had a good 8th inning, but he started the 9th inning and gave up a double. He was immeadiately replaced, but the runner scored and gave Quinowski the loss.

Oct. 29th: North Shore 5, Waikiki 3

Giants Prospects:
3B Mark Minicozzi - 2-4, 1 RBI, .323
RF Nate Schierholtz - 0-4, .230
RP Brian Anderson - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 2.16

Minicozzi had his third straight multi-hit game, with an RBI single in the 8th. But the game was out of hand by then. Meanwhile, Schierholtz's struggles came back as he dropped back down to a .230 average.

Brian Anderson came in to pitch for the 7th inning, and did exactly what he did all year in the regular season, sitting down North Shore quickly and quietly.

Oct. 30th: No Game Scheduled

Oct. 31st: Waikiki 7, West Oahu 3

Giants Prospects:
3B Mark Minicozzi - 2-3, 3 R, 2 2B (5), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB (2), .338
RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-4, 1 2B (5), 1 RBI, .231
RP Alexander Hinshaw - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2.70; H, 2

Minicozzi's string of multi-hit games went to 5 tonight, but unlike previous nights, it was both doubles. With those two doubles and a walk, Minicozzi scored a fall high 3 runs and also stole a base en route to one of his best games of a great fall.

Schierholtz doubled himself, and has as many doubles as Minicozzi (5) despite batting just .231 on the fall.

Hinshaw kept up his fall with a quiet 7th inning, striking out two of the three men he faced.

AFL - Scottsdale Scorpions

Oct. 26th: Scottsdale 6, Grand Canyon 6 (Suspended, 11 Innings)

Giants Prospects:
DH Kevin Frandsen - 1-4, .289
RP Justin Hedrick - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 4.76

Scottsdale and the Rafters fought to a standstill in this one. Maybe not enough Giants prospects participated? Frandsen singled in the first, but was thrown out at home on Mark Reynolds' double. Hedrick pitched the 8th and 9th inning. He gave up a ground-rule double with one out in the 8th, and the runner scored on a subsequent single, but that was all Hedrick would allow.

Oct. 27th: No Game Scheduled

Oct. 28th: Scottsdale 3, Peoria Saguaros 1

Giants Prospects:
1B Travis Ishikawa - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B (2), 1 SO, .176
SP Matt Palmer - 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 SO, 2.31
RP Pat Misch - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 4.50
RP Justin Hedrick - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 4.05; W, 1-0

Ishikawa has been struggling this fall, but he got Scottsdale on the board in the 5th, striking a one out double in the 5th, and scoring on Jamie D'Antona's single. Peoria would tie it at 1 in the 7th, but in the 9th Scottsdale scored 2 more runs to win.

Palmer had another solid start, despite the walks. He walked one to lead off the first and then two to lead off the second inning, but didn't allow any other runners in a good shutout outing. Misch came on in the 7th with runners on the corners and two out, but got a ground ball to end the inning with the game tied. Hedrick then took the 8th and got his first win of the fall.

Oct. 29th: No Game Scheduled

Oct. 30th: Scotsdale 12, Peoria Javelinas 3

Giants Prospects:
LF Fred Lewis - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (1), 1 BB, 1 SB (1), .312
1B Travis Ishikawa - 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .184

It's been rare to see Lewis and Ishikawa in the same game this fall, but they helped out in this big win for the surging Scorpions.

Lewis walked in the 6th inning, but it led to nothing. However, he doubled in the 8th with one out, and then stole third, and came around to score on a passed ball. Ishikawa got his lone single in the 7th inning, knocking in a run.

Oct. 31st: Scottsdale 7, Peoria Javelinas 6 (11 Innings)

Giants Prospects:
SS Kevin Frandsen - 3-5, 2 R, 1 BB, .415
RF Fred Lewis - 2-5, 1 R, 1 SO, 1 PO, .333
DH Travis Ishikawa - 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .190
RP Justin Hedrick - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 HBP, 3.52
RP Billy Sadler - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2 HBP, 0.00

The Giants got a few players in, and they all took part in a major way in this win. In the first, Frandsen singled with one out, followed by a Lewis Single. Both would score on a Mark Reynolds double. Later, Ishikawa singled to score Reynolds, the 4th run of the inning, which would only tie the game at 4 in the first frame alone.

In the 2nd, Frandsen singled with a man on first, moving the runner to third. After that, with Lewis batting, a balk scored the run to tie the game up again at 5. Lewis would be hit by a pitch.

In the 9th, with the Scorpions down one, Frandsen drew a one out walk. After Lewis struck out, Frandsen went to second on a wild pitch and then scored the game-tying run on a Reynolds single. Ishikawa would come up with the bases loaded later in the inning, but struck out to end the inning.

In the 10th, Frandsen singled with one out and runners on first and second, but the would-be winning run was thrown out at home. Surprisingly, no Giants were involved in the 11th inning's game winning run.

Hedrick had a solid 7th inning, just hitting a batter with one out. Sadler took the 9th and 10th innings, and hit a batter in each inning and a single in the 10th, but otherwise went unscathed.
