Fall League Update: 11/8-11/13

The end of the Fall seasons are approaching, and how are the teams doing? Rolls are going, and the Giants prospects are at the heart of it.

HWB - Waikiki Beach Boys

Nov. 8th: Waikiki 2, North Shore 0

Giants Prospects:
3B-2B Mark Minicozzi - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (8), 1 RBI, 1 SF, .218
RF Nate Schierholtz - 0-2, 1 BB, .222
RP Alexander Hinshaw - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 2.08; H, 3

Minicozzi started in the game at third, but moved to second base in the 2nd inning. The position change did affect him, as he hit a sacrifice fly in the 4th and doubled in the 7th. Schierholtz walked after Minicozzi's double, and Minicozzi later scored. Hinshaw pitched the 6th and 7th innings with little of note.

Nov. 9th: Waikiki 3, North Shore 2 (10 Innings)

Giants Prospects:
2B Mark Minicozzi - 0-4, 1 SO, .303
RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B (3), 2 SO, .224
RP David Quinowski - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 3.14; H, 2
RP Brian Anderson - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 BK, 2.77; BS, 2

Minicozzi had a rare 0-fer, dropping 4 at bats and striking out once. However, Schierholtz tripled to lead off the second inning, starting a 2 run rally that he scored the first run on.

Quinowski put up his usual solid outing, giving up just a 2 out double in the 6th before retiring the inning and finishing off the 7th in order. Anderson, however, started out tough. Anderson gave up a one out walk and one out double, and then the runner was balked to third. But the next batter hit a fly ball to right field, and Schierholtz doubled the runner off at home to preserve the tie and force the game into extra innings.

Nov. 10th: Waikiki 0, West Oahu 0 (11 Innings)

Giants Prospects:
3B Mark Minicozzi - 1-4, 1 SO,1 E (3), .301
RF Nate Schierholtz - 0-4, 2 SO, .213
RP Alex Hinshaw - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 1.86

The BeachBoys and the CaneFires fought to a standstill, and the game ended in a rare scoreless tie. Minicozzi singled to lead off the second, one of only 5 Waikiki hits. Meanwhile, Hinshaw pitched the 8th and 9th, giving up a leadoff single, but he got a double play and handled the rest of his outing seamlessly.

Nov. 11th: Waikiki 3, West Oahu 1

Giants Prospects:
2B-3B Mark Minicozzi - 0-4, 1 SO, .289
RP David Quinowski- 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 WP, 3.52

Waikiki's winning continued but so did Minicozzi's recent struggles. Minicozzi suffered his second hitless day in 3 days, dropping his average to .289. Quinowski had an off day of his own, giving up two singles and a sacrifice fly and giving up a rare run.

Nov. 12th: Waikiki 5, West Oahu 2

Giants Prospects:
3B Mark Minicozzi - 0-4, .277
RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-3, 2 SO, 2 E (2), .217
RP Brian Anderson - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 3.68
RP Alexander Hinshaw - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1.74; W, 1-1

Another rough day for the Giants Prospects. Schierholtz had another hit, but also made his first two errors of the fall in the 5th, missing a catch and then throwing the ball away. Minicozzi had another hitless day. Meanwhile, Anderson had one of his toughest days in Hawaii, pitching a perfect 4th inning, but then the 5th inning with Schierholtz's error turned into a tough inning, though both runs scored were earned. Hinshaw, however, relieved Anderson and stablized the 5th inning before following with a quick and silent 6th inning to pick up the win.

Nov. 13th: No Game Scheduled

AFL - Scottsdale Scorpions

Nov. 8th: Scottsdale 5, Phoenix 4

Giants Prospects:
SS Kevin Frandsen - 1-4, 1 R, 1 E (5), .413
LF Fred Lewis - 1-4, 1 SO, .300
RP Billy Sadler - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0.00

Frandsen continued a strong spring, although a rare error did mar his stat line. He did, however, single in the important 8th inning, setting up Mark Reynolds' 3 run homer that gave the Scorpions a narrow victory. Lewis returned to the leadoff spot and also ran out a hit on a bunt in the 3rd.

Sadler's sensational fall season continued with another solid nearly 2 innings. Sadler came into the game in the 8th. Sadler cam into the 8th innin after Phoenix broke a 2-2 tie, and got a force out, although a run scored on an error. Sadler got out of the inning, and after Scottsdale took the lead back, he got the win and pitched through an error in the 9th to finish the game.

Nov. 9th: Scottsdale 7, Peoria 6

Giants Prospects:
PH-LF Fred Lewis - 0-0, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (2), .300
RP Justin Hedrick - 0.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO, 5.59

The Giants kids made a very small dent in this one. Lewis came into the game in the 9th inning, with the potential tying run on second and one out. Lewis walked, and then stole second on a double steal. Both runners scored, with Lewis scoring the winning run, on another single. Hedrick started the 9th inning, but gave up a walk and a single before being removed.

Nov. 10th: Peoria Saguaros 5, Scottsdale 4

Giants Prospects:
SS Kevin Frandsen - 3-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SO, .426
CF Fred Lewis - 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .289
RP Pat Misch - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3.12
RP Billy Sadler - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 0.00

The AFL's leading hitter continued to demand respect in Arizona. Frandsen's 3 singles kept him on top of the order, with an RBI in the first and another in the 3rd. Lewis picked up his only single in the 5th, knocking in Frandsen. Meanwhile, Misch had another 1-2-3 inning pitching the 7th, and Sadler pitched the 9th, giving up just a walk while preserving the tie.

Nov. 11th: Scottsdale 4, Grand Canyon 3

Giants Prospects:
3B Kevin Frandsen - 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 SB (8), .431
RP Justin Hedrick - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 5.06; H, 4

How do you go 2 for 4 and barely improve your batting average? Such is the curse of Frandsen's performance so far. Frandsen singled in the first inning to no result. Frandsen also singled in the 5th inning with the bases loaded, driving in 2 runs. Frandsen also stole second as part of the double steal. Hedrick pitched a quiet 8th inning.

Nov. 12th: No Game Scheduled

Nov. 13th: Scottsdale 6, Peoria 2

Giants Prospects:
SS Kevin Frandsen - 1-4, 2 R, 1 HBP, 1 E (6), .421
DH Fred Lewis - 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .292

Scottsdale's winning continued as Frandsen had a relative offday. Frandsen only went 1 for 4, although he got a hit by pitch and scored 2 runs on the day. He also collected his 6th error. Lewis walked in the third, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly, and then singled 8th.
