Minor League Notebook | June 6

Stop the presses! Connecticut actually does have an offense. The Defenders come out swinging and put up double-digit runs in the first four innings in a rout. San Jose jumps ahead early, but then the bats go ice cold and a starter can't hold the lead. About the only thing that can keep Fresno and Augusta from winning these days is a day off. Just Another so-so Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies: No Game Scheduled

Winners of seven of their last eight games, the Grizzlies had the day off. Fresno travels to Las Vegas for the start of a four-game series tonight at 7:11 p.m. PST.

So far this season Connecticut's offense has had trouble scoring runs, but on Wednesday, the bats caught fire in a big way. The Defenders scored 10 runs in the first four innings of a 10-5 drubbing of Bowie.

Connecticut took a 1-0 lead in the first, due in large part to the base running of Eugenio Velez. The second baseman led off the game with a single, and after stealing second, went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Following walks by Trey Webb and Carlos Sosa, Velez came in to score on John Bowker's ground ball double play.

Infielder Mark Minicozzi scored on a balk, and Velez hit a sacrifice fly in the second to put the Defenders ahead 3-0.

The Defenders kept pouring it on in the third. After Sosa was retired leading off the inning, Bowker, Travis Ishikawa, and Mark Minicozzi hit consecutive singles, then Stephen Holm walked to bring in a run. Third baseman Todd Jennings stepped to the plate next and lined a two-run double to center.

Catcher Stephen Holm launched a three-run blast in the fourth to give Connecticut a 10-0 lead, with the Defenders never looking back.

Notes: Alexander Hinshaw allowed two earned runs in six innings to pick up his third win. … Velez stole his 11th and 12th bases. … Todd Jennings pinch-ran for Jake Wald, who had to leave the game due to an unspecified injury. … Minicozzi had two hits and scored three runs.

San Jose Giants: Visalia 5, San Jose 2 (Click here to see box score) http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_06_06_sjgafa_visafa_1

Lines of the day:

SS Brian Bocock – 3-4, 1 2B (5), 1 RBI (10), 1 SO
CF Antoan Richardson – 2-4, 2 R, 1 SB (26), 1 BB, 1 SO
LF Ben Copeland – 1-4, 1 RBI (19), 3 SO
SP Ronnie Ray – 5 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 1 E, L (4-3)
RP Ryan Paul – 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Visalia scored a pair of runs off of starter Ronnie Ray in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie, as San Jose was defeated 5-2

Following a walk to lead off the game, center fiedler Antoan Richardson came around to score on Brian Bocock's RBI double to give San Jose a 1-0 lead.

The Giants scored another run in the third when left fielder Ben Copeland knocked in Richardson with an RBI single, to put San Jose on top 2-0.

Unfortunately that would be all the offense that San Jose would muster on the night.

Notes: Ray turned in another shaky performance, giving up nine hits and four runs in five innings. … The top three batters in the lineup, Richardson, Bocock, and Copeland, combined to go 6-for-12, with a double and two RBI. … The rest of the lineup managed just two hits. … Reliever Ryan Paul threw two scoreless innings.

Augusta GreenJackets: No Game Scheduled

About the only thing that could keep Augusta from winning these days is a day off. The GreenJackets have been blistering hot with eight victories in their last 10 games. Augusta will take on Savannah in the first game of a four-game series tonight at 7:05 p.m. EST.
