Draft thread, anyone? Alright then. The draft begins today and the Tribe is poised to jam the farm system with talent.
A quick look at the first 5 picks for Cleveland:
1. 21st overall
2. 31st overall (Thanks, Ubaldo!)
3. 38th overall
4. 61st overall
5. 97th overall
5 picks in the first 100 selections of a deep draft and $8.23 million to spend (8th in the league) should get the farm buzzing. Excited to see what happens.
So far, the most common pick going to Cleveland in mock drafts (I know, mocks don't mean much of anything, but they at least give us a NAME to talk about) is Casey Gillaspie (Conor's brother). A switch-hitting first baseman from Wichita St. Showed power and average in college and is considered one of the most advanced bats in the draft. And at age 21, could be a viable Swish replacement when the contract is up in a few years. Although, he's starting to come off the board earlier in some predictions. Would love to see him fall to #21. A little scouting on the younger Gillaspie:
Another name that is popping with connection to the Indians is Jacob Gatewood. A high school SS. Maybe even at #31. Probably won't stick at short. He's already big as a high school senior at 6'5, 190. And is showing plus power. Potential thirdbaseman of the future. A little scouting on the Gatewood:
But, who knows what will happen? Carlos Rodon could always fall. Manziel-style.
