Captains routed, series tied 1-1

The Lake County Captains are now tied at one game apiece in their first Midwest League playoff series after losing at home to West Michigan, 8-0. The Captains got only four hits and allowed 18 and must win Friday night to claim the three-game series and advance to the second round. Right-hander Jason Knapp will get the call in the home game at Classic Ballpark.

Captains starter Vidal Nuno struck out seven without issuing a walk, but was finding too much of the plate. The left-hander was tagged for nine hits and four runs over five innings. Right-hander Owen Dew and lefty Nick Kirk were hit hard, too. Dew yielded four hits and two runs over 2 1-3 innings. Kirk gave up four hits and two runs and got only one out before Ramon Cespedes pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings despite walking three.

Lake County outfielders Delvi Cid and Greg Folgia threw out two other runners at home plate.

The Captains got only four singles. Jason Smit in the third, Tyler Holt in the fourth and Roberto Perez in the fifth all got leadoff hits and were stranded. They loaded the bases in the ninth on a one-out walk by Holt, single to left by Casey Frawley and another walk by Adam Abraham.

Chase Burnette then was called out on strikes and Perez flied out to center to end it.
