Captains Rally, Win Title Series Opener

The Lake County Captains scored six runs in the final two innings to win the first game of the Midwest League championship series, 9-6, over Clinton. Casey Frawley, Jason Smit and Greg Folgia each had two RBI and Mike Rayl earned the win in relief. Preston Guilmet struck out four over the final two innings to earn his fourth save of the playoffs. Game 2 is tonight in Clinton (Iowa).

Right-hander Jason Knapp struck out six over the first 3 1-3 innings for Lake County, but allowed two runs and two hits. He gave up only one hit over the first three innings, but hit a batter and yielded a one-out single in the fourth before leaving. Knapp, who missed the first five months of the season rehabbing an elbow injury, is on a very strict pitch count.

Nick Kirk came on and turned a 3-0 lead into a 7-3 deficit. He allowed both inherited runners to score and overall gave up seven hits and four more runs over 2 1-3 innings.

Clinton mistakes helped Lake County score twice in the seventh. Roberto Perez walked, Smit was hit by a pitch and Folgia reached on an error, with Perez scoring. Smit scored on a groundout by pinch-hitter Kyle Smith to get the Captains within 7-5.

Frawley singled to start the eighth, moved up on a wild pitch and Chase Burnette drew a one-out walk. A single by Perez loaded the bases before Smit's two-run single tied it at 7.

Folgia then added another two-run single for a 9-7 lead.

The Captains took a 3-0 lead in the third after Argenis Martinez reached on a two-out error. Delvi Cid was hit by a pitch and Tyler Holt had an RBI single. Frawley then hit a two-run double.
