Around The Farm: December 21, 2016 - Almonte, Pantoja put up numbers

On a mostly uneventful night around the farm, Abraham Almonte and Alexis Patoja represented the Indians well overseas.

Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians players throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Caribbean Leagues and Arizona Fall League. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

Note: The Indians do not currently have any minor leaguers in the Mexican Pacific League.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE

  • Abraham Almonte (Toros del Este, CF): 2-3, CS, PO – Almonte has now put together four two-hit games in his last eight. He’s having a solid offseason, hitting .333 in 21 games with 12 RBI, nine walks and just 12 K’s in 84 at-bats.
  • Michael Martinez (Estrellas Orientales, 2B): 1-4 – Martinez has now hit in five straight and has hits in six of his last seven games. He’s still only hitting .216 in his last 10 and .218 in 15 games this offseason.
  • Erik Gonzalez (Leones del Escogido, SS): 0-3, BB, K, E – Gonzalez’s hitless Wednesday snapped a short three-game hitting streak. Although he’s hitting just .216 in his last 10, the infielder is batting .260 in 20 games this season.
  • Ronny Rodriguez (Aguilas Cibaenas, 1B-LF): 0-3, R, BB, K – Rodriguez has now walked five times in his last seven games. He had walked just six times in his first 35 games, so this is a sign of improvement. He’s also struck out just 31 times in 157 games this offseason.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

  • Alexis Pantoja (Tiburones de Aguadilla, SS): 2-4 – Pantoja now has amassed eight hits in his last six games (22 at-bats). For the season, he’s hitting a solid .294 in 24 games in the Puerto Rican League, which sounds even better when you consider that he hit just .197 in 57 games with the Low-A Mahoning Valley Scrappers this summer.

VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE

  • Randy Valladares (Bravos de Margarita, RP): 0.1 IP, Perfect – For a fifth outing in a row, the left-hander was on the mound for one out or less. In fact, in that span, he’s tossed just one combined inning and has thrown just 4.2 innings across 14 games this offseason.
