Around The Farm: January 13, 2017 - Erik Gonzalez homers in loss

While Erik Gonzalez was the lone current Indian in winter ball action on Friday, there were a significant number of ex-Indians playing in both Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. Read about all of their performances as the IBI's Arthur Kinney takes you Around the Farm, Caribbean style...

Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians players throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Caribbean Leagues and Arizona Fall League. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

NOTE:  The Puerto Rican League was off yesterday.  The LPRC championship will start today.

Erik Gonzalez (Leones del Escogido, SS) - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 E - Gonzalez's ninth-inning solo homer was not enough for the Leones to overcome a three-run deficit.  Gonzalez is batting .264/.291/.434 in the postseason with six RBI in 13 games.  While his batting average is, well, average, his .170 isolated power may be enough to get a Serie Final team to take a look at him as a refuerzo should the Leones not qualify.

Charlie Valerio (Leones del Escogido, C) - 1-4 - Valerio, who only saw one at-bat in three appearances in the regular season, got a postseason start in Friday's game.

Colt Hynes (Gigantes del Cibao, RP) - H (1), 0.1 IP, perfect, 1 K - Hynes struck out the lone batter he faced yesterday. Not a spectacular outing, but he got the job done.

Anderson Hernandez (Tigres del Licey, 2B) - 2-4, 1 K, 1 E - Hernandez had a solid night at the plate, but committed his third error of the postseason.

Josh Judy (Aguilas Cibaenas,RP) - 1 IP, perfect - Judy's perfect ninth completed a 6-0 Aguilas win that clinched them a spot in the Serie Final. He has yet to allow an earned run in 30 winter ball appearances.

Aguilas Cibaenas - 11-2
Tigres del Licey - 6-8
Gigantes del Cibao - 5-8
Leones del Escogido - 5-9

Niuman Romero (Caribes de Anzoategui, 1B) - 1-3, 1 R, 2 BB - Solid plate discipline made up for a mediocre hitting performance on Friday.

Luis Hernandez (Caribes de Anzoategui, 2B) - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 Sac Bunt, 1 SB - Hernandez had an unspectacular, but solid, offensive effort to help the Caribes win 7-1 to tie the best-of-seven semifinal series one game apiece with the Aguilas del Zulia.

Yohan Pino (Caribes de Anzoategui, SP) - ND, 4.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R (earned), 1 BB, 3 K - Pino's spectacular start was instrumental in the Caribes' aforementioned victory but, unfortunately, he did not pitch enough innings to earn the individual win.

Luis Valbuena (Cardenales de Lara, 1B) - 2-2, 2 R, 1 3B, 3 BB - Valbuena combined excellent hitting and a good eye for a perfect night at the plate.

Carlos Rivero (Cardenales de Lara, 3B) - 1-3, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K - Rivero drove in nearly half of the Cardenales' runs in a 9-5 win over the Tiburones de La Guaira to tie the series at a game apiece.
