2016's crop of minor league prospects yielded quite the return.
Not only did the Double-A Akron RubberDucks prosper and convincingly sweep the Eastern League Championship, but a package of upper-tier prospects including Clint Frazier and Justus Sheffield were dealt for Andrew Miller, the centerpiece of the Cleveland Indians World Series run.
The coaching staffs at each respective minor league level certainly can be attributed to this success.
The Tribe announced a bevy of moves relative to their 2017 Player Development System on Tuesday early afternoon.
Headlining the day's news was the likes of Chris Tremie (Columbus Clippers manager), Mark Budzinski (Akron RubberDucks manager), Tony Mansolino (Lynchburg Hillcats manager), Larry Day (Lake County Captains manager) and Luke Carlin (Mahoning Valley Scrappers manager).
Formerly acting as the manager for the RubberDucks, David Wallace will make the transition to Special Assignment Coordinator. Wallace was named Baseball America's 2016 Minor League Manager of the Year last December.
Tremie is primed for a fifth season with Columbus and will be assisted by Steve Karsay (pitching coach), Rouglas Odor (hitting coach), Jerry Owens (bench coach) and Chad Wolfe (athletic trainer). Owens is the lone newcomer to the staff after serving a 14-year professional baseball tenure highlighted by 129 games with the Chicago White Sox from 2006-09. The speedy outfielder has 185 minor league stolen bases but hung up the spikes at the conclusion of 2016's Mexican League campaign.
Budzinski earned the deserving promotion from Lynchburg to Akron courtesy of a first place regular season record of 84-56 and a berth in the Mills Cup Championship Series. He will be joined by Tony Arnold (pitching coach), Johnny Narron (hitting coach), Omir Santos (catcher) and Jeremy Heller (athletic trainer). Narron will make the long trek across the country for his new position after spending the past two years as the hitting coordinator and Triple-A hitting coach within the Los Angeles Angels organization.
Similar to Budzinski, Mansolino will bump up from Lake County to Lynchburg thanks to a season that featured the in-season promotions and development of Thomas Pannone, Tyler Krieger, Francisco Mejia, Jared Robinson, David Armendariz and Connor Marabell. Alongside Mansolino will be Rigo Beltran (pitching coach), Kevin Howard (hitting coach) and Bobby Ruiz (athletic trainer). The bench coach for the Hillcats has yet to be determined.
Day will get his first taste of a managerial role after previously serving as the hitting coach for Lynchburg and Mahoning Valley. A pitching coach for the Captains has not been named, but Justin Toole (hitting coach), Junior Betances (bench coach) and Matt Beauregard (athletic trainer) will assist Day in 2017.
Carlin has been tabbed to manage Mahoning Valley with experience as a minor and major league catcher from 2002-2015. The name might ring a bell for Indians fans due to Carlin's brief stint with the club in 2010 and 2012. The 36-year-old's coaching staff consists of Pete Lauritson (hitting coach), Grant Fink (bench coach) and Jake Legan (athletic trainer). Fink spent three years in the Tribe's farm system prior to a one-year tenure in the Frontier League in 2016.
Other noteworthy transactions and fresh faces include Matt Blake (Assistant Director of Player Development), Todd Kubacki (performance coordinator) and Joe Torres (Arizona League Indians pitching coach).
