Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians players throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Caribbean Leagues and Arizona Fall League. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.
Note, the Dominican Winter League and Venezuela Winter Leagues were off on Wednesday in preparation of their championship series. The best-of-nine DWL Championship series begins tonight (Jan 19) and the best-of-seven VWL Championship Series begins on Friday (Jan 20).
Puerto Rico Winter League
Joe Colon (RP, Cangrejeros de Santurce): 1.0 P, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Colon made his fifth appearance in the PWL playoffs, and his sixth overall if you include his lone appearance the last week of the season on December 30th to get prepared for the postseason. In his six appearances he has totaled just 4.0 innings and has yet to give up a hit and has 3 strikeouts, though he has allowed one run (earned) thanks to a wild outing on Sunday when he allowed three walks. Aside from that one hiccup in his performance, he's been very strong in the small sample size of outings he has pitched this offseason. For a pitcher that is in the running to win the last bullpen spot for the Indians this coming spring, it may seem odd to see the Indians expose him to any kind of workload prior to reporting for spring training on February 12th, but the exposure is limited and he may only pitch around 8-12 innings maximum in the PWL playoffs and potentially the Caribbean Series if his team makes it or he is drafted onto the team that represents Puerto Rico.
I should also make a quick note that ATF looks to be rapidly winding down for the offseason. With the playoffs wrapping up and so few Indians players in action - past or present - we will only be posting sporadic ATF columns for the remainder of the league playoffs and the upcoming Caribbean Series. We will be back on a regular basis on Friday April 7th after the minor league season kicks off on Thursday April 6th!
