Around The Farm: January 21, 2017 - Yonathan Mendoza makes a postseason appearance

Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians players throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Caribbean Leagues and Arizona Fall League. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

Ronny Rodriguez (Aguilas Cibaenas, 2B) - 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K - Following a subpar Game Two on Friday, Ronny-Rod was back to being Ronny-Rod on Saturday as he was a big part of an eleven-run offensive explosion that saw the Aguilas take a two games to one lead in the best-of-nine Serie Final.  He is now 5-for-13 (.385) in the Serie (three games) and .313/.356/.455 with 19 RBI and five stolen bases (in as many attempts) for the entire offseason (59 games).  He seems certain to be part of the Dominican squad in the Serie del Caribe if the Aguilas win the Dominican title, and maybe even if they don't.

Anderson Hernandez (Tigres del Licey, starting 2B) - 0-2, 1 K - Hernandez had an unimpressive day at-the plate and was pulled for pinch hitter Engel Beltre in the fifth inning (he wasn't alone in getting the quick hook, the box score from this game looks more like something from spring training or an all-star game than a championship round game).

Jose Constanza (Aguilas Cibaenas, PH) - 0-1 - Constanza reached on an error pinch-hitting for pinch-hitter Orlando Calixte, who never came to the plate, in the bottom of the fifth inning and was replaced by a defensive substitute to start the sixth.  As you may have guessed, this whole string of events was due to a back and forth of pitching changes and pinch hitters by the two managers.

Yonathan Mendoza (Cardenales de Lara, backup SS) - 1-1 - Mendoza is batting 1.000 in the postseason after getting a hit in his first at-bat of the playoffs on Saturday.  Given his limited playing time and the extent to which the Aguilas del Zulia are dominating the best-of-seven Serie Final (they are up two games to none with a +20 run differential following yesterday's 11-1 victory over the Cardenales), it seems that Mendoza's winter season will be coming to an end at the conclusion of this series.

Carlos Rivero (Cardenales de Lara, 3B) - 1-4, 1 2B, 3 K, 1 E - An extra-base hit and a hat trick in four at-bats.  Not sure how much more feast-or-famine a batting performance can get.

Jose De La Torre (Criollos de Caguas, RP) - 2 IP, 2 H, 2 K - De La Torre's solid middle relief effort helped the Criollos even the best-of-Nine Serie Final at three games apiece (oh, and scoring 12 runs didn't hurt, either).

Mitch Nilsson (Brisbane Bandits, DH) - 2-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI - Nilsson had an incredible day at the plate as the Bandits continued their quest for a playoff spot (1.5 games out of third place [the final playoff spot] with six to play as of press time, detailed standings to come in tomorrow's edition of ATF).

Loek van Mil (Adelaide Bite, RP) - 1 IP, 1 H - Another day, another scoreless inning for van Mil, whose ERA now stands at 0.44.
