At pick 642 in the 21st round, the Cleveland Indians have selected second baseman Tyler Friis out of Indiana State University.
Born: 2/12/96 — Height: 5'9" — Weight: 180 — Bats: Switch — Throws: Right
Jeff Ellis: Indiana State is a program that has been on the rise in terms of players getting drafted. Friis is a switch-hitting cold weather player, both of which are things the Indians often look for. He is from the state of Washington so when he moved to Indiana for college, the weather might have actually improved for him. He is a strong contact player who was very hard to strike out in college. His best play came in the Great Lakes League last summer. I also got reports of strong defense at second base. Expect him to report to Mahoning Valley.
Press Release: Batted .322 in 45 games for the Sycamores in his junior season with 11 doubles and 23 RBI…also led the team with 14 steals.
