|Player Evaluation: Lenny DiNardo|
As part of our report card feature for Diehard Magazine, we asked Red Sox players to evaluate their 2006 performance. Some declined to participate and found it difficult to analyze themselves, but many took part in the survey. Over the next two weeks, we'll be running the exclusive and complete self-evaluations of the participants along with the Diehard report card. Today: Lenny DiNardo.
(1-2, 7.85 ERA, 17 strikeouts, 2.08 WHIP)
DiNardo was the first pitcher to get a shot at the no. 5 spot in the rotation following David Wells' injury in April but found it difficult to get big league hitters out with a fastball that wouldn't be pulled over on the Mass Pike. DiNardo posted an 8.10 ERA and failed to get out of the fifth inning in five starts before he went on the DL with a neck strain that cost him more than three months.
He made six appearances (one start) in September and gave up multiple runs four times. The Sox have him to the Arizona Fall League, where he's performed surprisingly well (1-0 with a 2.79 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings over seven appearances). His chances of developing into anything more than a 4-A pitcher appear slim, but the Sox are fond of him and he may have earned himself one more shot with his success in the AFL.
2006 GRADE: Incomplete.
PLAYER EVALUATION: "I think my ERA's around 8, so not very good at all. I'm going to the Fall League to work on a lot of things, including mechanics, flexibility and strength, and [he wants to] kind of just forget about this. Kick back into gear and hopefully have a better year next year.
On whether he took anything from any of his successful starts: "There's some starts I felt like I really got a lot out of. Some relief appearances, I feel like I really got a lot out of as well. There's also a couple of starts where I could have done a whole lot better. Likewise with relief. But overall, an 8 ERA, in this league, you're not going to stick around. That's how I look at it. Gives me a lot to work on, right?"
