The Mariners came back from Japan with 28 players on their active roster, and they of course need to get to 25 before the regular season opens, with the deadline being 2 pm on Wednesday. One of the three players being optioned was revealed this morning when the club announced that right-handed reliever Shawn Kelley had been sent to Tacoma.
Kelley, a 13th round pick in the 2007 draft by Seattle, has battled injuries the past few seasons but came back to throw 10 scoreless games for the big club late in 2011. The 27-year-old pitched in the second game in Japan and gave up a home run to Yoenis Cespedes, netting the decision in the Mariners 4-1 loss. For his career Kelley has a 3.75 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 74 games and 84 innings -- all in relief -- for Seattle.
