George Sherrill Profile
The Seattle Mariners made a roster move for the bullpen today as they placed left-handed relief pitcher George Sherrill on the 15-day disabled list with what is being termed a strained flexor bundle in his left elbow and recalled left-handed relief pitcher Charlie Furbush from Triple-A Tacoma. Sherril, a free agent acquisition this off-season who returned to the place where he spent the first four years of his MLB career from 2004 – 2007, had struggled out of the gate this season by allowing six hits, two home runs and posting a 27.00 ERA and 5.25 WHIP in two appearances and just 1 1/3 innings. Sherrill also had a rough time in Cactus League play where he was hit around to the tune of a 8.44 ERA and 1.88 WHIP in 5 1/3 Spring Training innings.
In sharp contrast to Sherrill, Furbush had a fantastic spring for the M's, with a 0.87 ERA and 0.77 WHIP in 10 1/3 innings pitched covering seven games. The left-hander has seen his velocity increase as he has concentrated on a bullpen role. Last season in 11 appearances and 10 starts for Seattle Charlie had a 6.62 ERA and 1.45 WHIP last year in 53 innings while striking out 7.0 batters-per-nine for Seattle. Furbush – who pitched himself out of a bases loaded, no out jam in Tacoma two nights ago, will be available for tonight's game.
